Hi, Im new..Just a few questions if anyone knows. I have a 1997 chevy cavalier...the timing chain broke and went into the cam gear(what they said anyways) in 2000 and I had it fixed and it was costly..now its 4 years later and the timing chain is "bad" again..how long do theses things last? I have never had a car break the timing chain before this one..plus i just had a new alternator placed on it and it was replaced 4 years ago also...my car only has 30,000 original miles on it I read somewhere that the timing chain usually lasts 60,000 miles..I think this car is a lemon, it has had recalls galore...including one that came too late(the air bags deployed early going over uneven railroad tracks and cost over 6000.00 in damage, then i get a recall on the airbags after the fact) figures:/..I am automotively challenged have no idea about cars...any help would be appreciated. Thanks

only 30,000 miles?! a timing chain will "usually" last 100,000 miles or more ( ive seen them last over250000 miles before). is this new chain bad (stretched) or is it broken also?

Yes. Go to another shop. If you really did break a timing chain I doubt the motor could be repaired. I would certainly take more than just a new chain and gear set. Good Luck.
