Hey yall, i just ordered some 17 inch gunmetal with silver lip rims that come with 205-40-17 tires.
The rim company said this is too thin for my car and i should pay more than the listed price for the package to get thicker tires.
Well, the last time i checked, low profile tires cost more than the fat ones.
Is is safe to run a low profile like that? Especially on the highway?
I know its gonna be bumpy but as long as its safe.
Pics will come soon but please tell me if its safe.
thanks!

You can use a smaller tire than is recommended if you choose to. The ride will be a little bumpy with thinner rubber, but it won't hurt anything. The only thing you might want to be cautious about is your speed. What will happen is you will probably be going slower than you really are, most noticable at higher speeds. Your computer is set to a certain tire diameter to display your speed. If you go with a larger tire diameter, you will be going faster than your speedometer says. And with a smaller diameter tire, you will be going slower. Here is an example (it probably isn't extremely accurate, but you will get an idea of what I am talking about), if your speedometer says you are doing 40, you might only be doing 37. The smaller diameters also effects your gas milage per tank. If you normally drive, lets say 250 miles per tank (mix city and highway), you will probably actually only drive 230 miles. But, if you don't care about those 2 things, then have fun with the new wheels and tires.

Hey,
Ya, i just heard today about the speedomiter thing,,, That kinda killed my "new-wheel-high". Damn, but i called a speedometer shop, they said that its only 7percent and about 3-4 mph.
O well!
But he also said it might throw off my shift points.
But i heard that malibus dont have set shift points, they shift according to throttle position and other variables..??
correct?
thanks!!! yall are gr8 help with the malibu!

HEYYY!!
I just got the rims, and as soon as i got out of the shop from mounting and balancing, the front passenger almost fell off and i lost 2 lugs!!!
Anyways, fixed that in a parking lot.
2 other rims had to be remounted when i got home cuz they had them mounted uneven.
Now, the only problem is the rear, drivers side... Its kind of wobbly.
I dont know why, they have been balanced but still wobbly.
Also, another problem is that the rear wheels dont touch the drum cover and that makes noise!!
HELPP
it sound bad when i drive it cuz the drum covers move back and forth!
HELLPPPP
im bout to cry, i cant figure it out :(
thanks!

I REALLY RECOMMEND YOU GET NEW RIMS UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPEND AND EXTRA $200 ON THOSE! I BOUGHT 18" RIMS AND I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HUB HITTING THE RIMS! IT DIDNT LAST TOO LONG BECAUSE I GOT SOMETHING TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.. I HAD IT FOR LIKE 2 MONTH THEN ONE DAY ON THE HIGHWAY WE SEE SOMTHING FLY OUT THE REAR RIGHT SIE OF THE CAR THEN SUDDELY THE CAR BEGAN TO SHKE A LOT! I THOUGH IT WAS A FLAT! BUT WHEN I GOT OUT SIDE AND SAW THE CAR I NOTICED GOD SAVED ME BECAUSE MY RIM WAS BEING HELD ON BY ONE LUG NUT! ALL THE OTHER 4 DIDNT ONLY FALL OUT BUT IT BROKE 4 OF THE 5 SCREWS THAT HOLD YOUR RIM IN PLACE!!!!! YES I WAS VERY SCARED!! I THEN WAS TOLD THAT THE SCREW DONT ACTUALLY HOLD YOUR RIMS ON THE CAR!! WHAT HOLDS IT IS THAT SPACE THAT YOU HAVE BETWEEN THE RIM AND THE HUB! THE LUGS ALL THEY DO IS KEEP IT IN PLACE! IN OTHER WORDS THOSE SCREWS ARENT MADE TO HOLD THE WEIGHT IF THE CAR!! THINK ABOUT IT! DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT 5 SCREWS CAN HOLD THE 2000+ POUNDS OF YOUR CAR!!? PLEASE TAKE THIS AS A SAFETY THING!!! IM JUST TRYING TO HELP!....... DOES YOUR CAR SHAKE ALOT AFTER LIKE 60 MPH? THATS THE PROBLEM! PLEASE IF YOU NEED ANY HELP ON ANYTHING REGARDING THIS MATTER LET ME KNOW I CAN HELP YOU BUT YOU REALL Y NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!
