Contemplating Jeep Cherokee Purchase

This question is for past or present Jeep Cherokee owners.
I am thinking of buying a used Jeep Cherokee (Grand, Laredo or Sport - V8 or V6). I'd like some input as to whether this is a wide or foolish move - whether I should just walk away or does someone have a better suggestion along these same lines?
I plan to use the vehicle for a lot of winter activities and a rough commute to work along some pretty dicey roads and also for summer getaways, etc., etc.
Please post back some impressions or advice as to what are good model years, V6 vs. V8, etc. I've been looking at '98 and up, 75,000 to 100,000 km with good options and 4 x 4.
Thanks.
Caymancan.

We went into Jeep ownership half blind - and lucked out. We wound up with a 96 JGC larado with Up Country and we are really happy with it.
For what you describe I would suggest the standard Cherokee in a Classic or Limited model. You will have some of the luxury along with a lot of drivability.
The Inline6 is the way to go in the cherokee. no V8 available and the 4 cyl. is just way to small to my liking.
I guess this advice is from the point of view of what I would like for myself in addition to the JGC. The jgc is great for the highway and occasional back country but I would like to keep it nicer than it will stay if I were to take it back country alot. My wife handles it easily with the fulltime 4wd .
just my 0.02

I love the Jeeps. The restyling I like the best. Instead of being boxy, etc. And they are great in bad weather to drive with. I always get mine at Rockland Auto Plaza, which is here in Rockland County NY.
Depending on how many passengers you may normally have riding with you, the Libertys are good. I've got a Grand myself, but if I needed a bit less space, I'd get that model.
Hope I was helpful

THe Grand Cherokee 1998 newer comes base 4.0 straight 6, 5.2l v-8 and 4.7l v-8. The base (box) jeep is either 2.5 4 cycle or the 4.0. The v-8 of course has more power, but the 4.0 is a time tested tank of a motor. As long as it is keep up the six cyl will go for a very long time. I have 175K on mine and my buddy just past the 200K mark. Both our jeeps are stock and get abused monthly. Good luck and you will Love your Jeep

I have a 98 JGC Ltd. (5.2) I bought it new, paid cash $36,000 out the door. Has all the bells and whistles available. At the time it was a good deal, the samething was going for around 40K.
The factory Goodyear AT's suck. No tread life whatsoever. Get the Michelin's if possible, much better tire. The ride is fantastic without a doubt. And as far as snow or bad weather. The year I bought it 97 we had a blizzard in Colorado where I lived at the time. Closed down the entire state for 3 days. Dropped 37 inches of snow over night.
I was the only one out in my neighborhood driving in, around, or right through the snow banks. I used it as a plow for many neighbors to clear out there driveways. Not sure why, they still were unable to drive there cars on the streets (lol). It rides like a Tank in bad weather.
Now for the fun part. And there are no choices to be made here. GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!!! And dealer preferred if possible. Before you know it, you'll know all the folks in the service department by a first name bases. Heck with as long a time as you'll be spending there one of em might even name their first born after you (big smiles). Thoughts of being banned from the website running through my mind now.
Aww I'm just half teasing (<---disclaimer help for not being banned)
Naah, but they are great vehicles. But do get an extended warranty (peace of mind).
