I would say no unless the driver of the Jetta messes up.

2.3 160 hp @ 6500 rpm
150 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm

1.8T 180 hp @ 5500 rpm
173 lb-ft @ 1950 rpm

The 3 has more style though ;)

The mazda is a great, sporty little car. However, for the price range you can't expect it to be a real racer and still have all the refinements that it has for the money. If you want a jetta and the extra speed, fork over a few more G's. Then you'll have a quicker car with less overall appeal. Just my opinion.

i really don't think that the 3 has that much style . especially the 5 door which looks horrible. i've driven the 3 and it's speed and torque are not there, i think it's just for the mom with two kids who wants to go around town and thats it.

what are you talking about saying that it doenst have much style? name another car on the road that looks like it. i cant think of one. i love mine and its a blast to drive too. and i definately dont think its for the "mom with two kids." i will agree that the 5 door doesnt look the greatest, but thats why i got the 4 door.

hey that's just my opinion everyone has one so it does'nt really mean nothing. the 4 door does look better i just don't like the front and the rear? and your gonna have a major headache if you try and upgrade your stereo system some say you can't change it, from others i heard you can but it just a pain in the ass, the way the everything is connected to the stereo system. granted its pretty cool that your mechanic can connect the computer to your stereo and it comes out on the screen saying whats wrong, etc . theres no room in the back seat, and the aftermarket is hardly there for the 3

As for the Styling..... For the price range what's not to love. My 3 S series is a four door, which I agree looks a lot better than the 5 door. Our 3 came with the spoiler, 17 in wheels, power moonroof, and we talked the dealer into putting in heated leather seats in it. I think the car looks amazing.

As for the performance.... Speaking about the 2.3 not the standard motor. I don't think it's a race car by any means but it is quite sporty. I read a couple reviews and I can't remember which source it came from but he explained that the 2.3 is such a smooth and quiet revving engine that you don't get the "feel" that the engine has as much power as it has. Some cars are on the obnoxious side when you floor them and you feel like your driving a Z28 or something with the sound level and vibrations that are associated. If you have a set-up like mine, floor it at about 30 mph and see how long it takes you to get to 80 mph.....Not to damn long. And quiet the whole way. The cornering capability of the car is awesome as well, it feels like you're glued to the road. I think mazda hit a home run with this car. If not, buy the RX-8 if you want a faster car.

Yes it is not a "race car" but if you are not careful you will find you self speeding, It is a very quiet car and it is worth the price.
You may be able to beat a jetta, it is alll in how you dirve your car.
