1997 Ventilation Fan Problem

My 1997 Blazer's ventilation fan is intermitently not running. There are times when I start the car with fan/ac on and nothing happens for 30 seconds or so and then the fan just starts to run. There are times when the car is already running with the fan off, and I'll turn the fan/ac on and nothing happens. I'll try any and all fan speed positions and nothing happens. I've not been able to catch it not working..everytime I get under the hood and get a voltmeter to the fan...the fan is working and of course there is voltage to the motor.

Any Ideas anyone has would be greatly welcome

I would change out the fan for sure, sounds like it is weak.

When it does eventually start up, does it sound weird and slowly increase its speed?

When the fan does start to run it sounds fine. It seems more like a bad connection and the juice just isn't getting to the motor. If the fan won't run I'll try switching the fan speed control through it's settings and it doesn't make a difference... then all of sudden on it's own the fan will start to run..

My sis-in-law has a 98 Blazer and her fan wont come on at all. We figured that she needed a new fan motor. I went out and got her one, but I'm not sure where it goes. Does anyone know of any links where it will show a walk thru on how to replace? Even if I knew where to start I would be able to take it from there. Thanks for your help.

The fan motor is located under the hood on the passenger's side up against the fire wall to the passenger compartment. It is completely encased in a plastic shroud that you have to cut through with a razor knife..the fan resistor is the same thing (have to cut to get to it) The Haynes manual for Chevy Pickups including s-10's & Blazers will show you the location and give you steps for removal. You may be able to see one at your local Library or buy one at AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts etc. for around $16.00 or so.
