1996 Jetta GLS - Ignition coil

After raining for a few days, my Jetta would only start after repeated atempts. I read on a website to spray various areas of the ignition system with water to determine which area was getting moisture. After spraying the distributor (very lightly with water) the car shut off and now will not start. I tested the coil and was receiving an orange spark. So I purchased two seperate ignition coils made by Wells (purchased at AutoZone) and tested them in the car. Neither one emitted any spark. I assumed there was a manufacturing defect with these coils, but I'm not sure. The engine light is coming on so I believe the relay is working. Any suggestions on what the problem may be (ie, coil, relay, ECU, sensor, etc.) and how to test will be very helpful. Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem. I could only see the spark on the side of the coil when it rained and at night. I replaced the coil and haven't had a problem since. Good luck.

Did you ever get your car fixed? I am having the same problem and would like your help. Someone broke the old coil which would still fire.
Tried 3 different coils from Autozone and they will not fire.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
