Air Bag indicator

Hello again!

I have a 98 Trans Port with about 160,000 kms on it. My Air Bag indicator light is on. It used to come on only when I hit water, but now it is on all the time. I had it checked for codes - said something about comms interruption. I read this as there is a loose connector or split somewhere. I am not sure where to start looking, or how to start looking as Air Bag circuits are typically not something you want be sticking test lights etc. into due to things going "bang" unexpectedly.

Anyone with this problem or some insite who wishes to reply would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have the problem but would recommend that you take the van to the dealer for service. The airbag circuit is sensitive and one wrong move will cause it to activate. It sounds like you have a wire or sensor that is going bad and needs to be replaced. The dealer should be able to correct this in a few minutes and at a reasonable cost.

Not exactly the answer I was looking for - but one I expected. Thanks for the reply.

After a frontal crash I had to exchange the (exploded) airbag. New the new (used) is built in but on the panel I have still the red warning - "Airbag".
Should the new airbag be activated electronically? Or the sensors?
May be interruption of battery mains would be helpful?

The light comes on indicating that there is a problem in the system somewhere. It's possible that when the airbag activated, another component also was damaged. My 98 Trans Sport has a loose connection under the drivers seat for the side airbag. If something has rolled under the seat and bumped into the connector, the light comes on. Unplugging and plugging in the connector seems to fix it for me.

While working on anything near a connector for the airbag system, there is a fuse I beleive in the passenger side interior fuse panel to pull to deactivate the SRS. My haynes manual has the procedure.
