Too much heat, 96 Explorer

Heater Valve sprung a leak. Only leaked when heater was shut totally off. Replaced the valve, but now the heater blows very hot air. Only can regulate it by switching to A/C or turning it off. Any thoughts?

I have a similar problem with a 98 Mountaineer. Had to repace the Bypass hose, since then it's either Max Air, or Max heat.......nothing in between. Tempature control has no effect at all. Have checked it with ohm meter and it's okay. Switching from floor to defrost, or panel heat works fine. The only change in temperature is when it's in Max air, otherwise always extremely hot air.

Have you eliminated the blend door sticking/broken as a culprit? Seems like everyone with that issue has the reverse problem, NO heat. Suppose the door could be stuck in the open position as well? That involves taking out the dash to get to the problem. $1,000+ repair bill.

Unless I'm not understanding the blend door problem, I can't see where it would be the problem. I'm able to get either heat or cold, just nothing in between......? Max air gives me ice cold air..............switching to anything else gives me extreme heat. Temp comtrol has no effect at all. I've read some of the posts about the blend door, and I'm going to dif into that this week one day, just to eleminaate it as a possibility. I'll post back the results. By the way I saw a simple fix for the door blend problem on another forum here. It may have been the Mountaineer forum. And it was much less than the $1000 that everyone refers to.....seems to me it was less than ten bucks and some time.

Make sure no vacuum lines are broken or disconnected. A vacuum leak in the system may cause it to default to max. heat.

Are the vacuum lines difficult to get to or replace as a DIY job?

The main vacuum line is easy to get to under the hood. You may have pulledit loose changing the heater valve.

Finally had time to tear into the problem. Seems it was the blend door. Did the fix that's posted on here and on FTE and that seems to have fixed the problem for now. But I'm considering re-doing the fix using the fender washer option. I think it's a better fix and will get you back to a more exact fix. Using the quick fix by drilling throught the shaft and pinning it works, but it leaves the control a bit sloppy. if the break was exactly straight across the axis it wouldn't matter. But these seem to break in different places. Using the fender washer fix puts the pins in the exact location needed and removes the play from the uneven break.
Although mine is working and I'm able to conrol the heat and cold air now, it isn't pefect. any more than about the 9 to 10 o'clock position and it's extreme heat. And when set to max cold, the air isn't as cold as it could be, telling me the door isn't fully opening or closing. I do believe the fender washer fix would corrrect this. When I have some time I'm going to try it and see what happens
