Air Intake Systems

Hey...I am looking for a WAI or CAI for a 2002 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L that is not an ecotec or a Z24. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good intake kit that is not too pricey?

Most of the intakes I find are too expensive, or they are for the wrong year/model/engine. Any suggestion should help!

Also, I like the style of the Toucan intake kits- but, I have only seen them available for 2.4L's. Does anyone know if it is possible to modify a Toucan to fit on a 2.2L? :uhoh:

the cheapest way to get a cai is to build it yourself! find somebody with some welding skills and get some tube!

Where could one find instructions for a project like that? I'm certain i could figure it out, but i would like to know all the details before hand. I can get all the parts i need from Canadian Tire for relatively cheap. Im gonna search right now, i'll post here if i find anything.

well, here's a question for ya, can i buy any old short ram kit and just mod the connection to my ecotech's stock intake? Or, does the problem lie with the bend and shape of the actual piping not fitting under the hood?

well like i said its a custom made... i know a few people who own a small side business called RD Fabs... the intake is comprised of 4 mandrel bend stainless steel pieces welded together then the welds were ground down and polished.... but another thing you can do is....purchase these and make it yourself...

Parts needed:
1- 92-2000 Honda Civic intake
1- 3 inch 90 degree rubber elbow
1- 3 inch cone filter
1- PCV breather filter
2- 3 inch hose clamps

but personally i'd rather have something meant for the car and not a choppy home creation... you should look at Kustmace's CAI... its functional but is prolly the most ghetto setup i've seen...

these parts are way below factory prices and include everything for a complete install...

well, damn. Those look pretty nice. I truley appreciate your advice, I think i just got myself a project for this weekend.
Hell, I could prolly find an intake off of a honda in a matter of a couple hours and the local Pick-a-Part, as for the tubing, that's a piece of cake. I can polish/powedercoat and what not to make it look less ghetto. I'll post pics for sure!

hmm, My engine looks completely different than the ones in those pics.
IfI'm not mistaken, the intake comes off the front of the engine, in both those pics it seems to originate from the back.

Mine's a 2.2L ecotech, from a 2002 z24.

another not.. you cannot use the civic intakes for the ecotec.. you have to buy one or get into a real custom fab'd project going.... civic intakes will only work for the 2.2L LN4 and the 2200 LN4.... the engines above were the 2200 LN4...i forgot how much the ecotec intake was... i know its a little more than 100 since there it more parts for it... still give chris an e-mail...

scratch all of that.... the person in the first post is different from you... sorry... personally i would just buy an intake meant for the ecotec... it will make for a cleaner look....

I already talked to Chris about it, we are working out the details. I'm undecided if i want the CAI or the short ram.. I was inquiring about the differance in performance... I'm in canada, so any air the short ram is gonna get is gonna be hella cold already. Summer is only about 15 minutes long here.

CRJ how much would they charge to make a WAI or CAI for a 2001 2.2? And will they ship? I like the looks of those!

Shit, a hundred bucks is still too much. My total was $70, and its a true Cold Air Intake.

I'd like to hear why u think its a true CAI?... Yes it appears to run down into your fender.. but you see, that black rubber hose... has ridges inside of that and has the potential of slowing down air flow.. No doubt its functional, but i hope you don't open your hood at a car show or meet... but Kudos on the idea..

If I had the machine to bend the pipe I'd make my own cai, but I dont. Maybe I can find someone that does. And yes $100 is a bit much. Thanks anyways though CRJ.

01 cavy.... if you have the non-ecotec... you can do the civic intake that i mentioned above... but that will come pretty close to 100 bucks aswell... adding HP isn't cheap...

Yeah I know it isn't cheap...but I'm sure I can save money by making my own. I had a friend that worked at a job that had a machine that could bend pipes, but he's no longer there. Maybe I can get a muffler shop to do it for me.

I work in the midst of about 8 different machine shops, and quite a few custom car shops... Right in the heart of an industrial type area. I'm sure i could convince one of these places to bend some pipes for me for relatively cheap. The piping itself is pretty cheap too.

100 bucks US is alot to you guys? Man, I have small Canadian dollars here... that's like $15,000CND at the current conversion rate.

I can do it for 50 bucks + parts canadian dollars, on my lunch break :)
