My wife has a 2001 Z24. Just the other day the Check Engine" light came on. Now I know it has to do with the emissions syste - so it could be either a loos gas cap or one of the two O2 sensors. My question is: I know there is a poor man's way of checking the code by using a spade? or a bent paper clip and insert it into the A and B terminals on the upper row of the data link connector and turning the ignition key to ON position. Can someone verify this for me that this is the correct way to check it?

Your wasting your time doing it the manual way. Just take it to a shop and get them to hook it up to a scanner. They will usually check it for free, we do. :)
