the timing chain broke. I put a new one in, but the cam gear does not have a mark on the gear so I am not sure if I have it lined up right. There is a hole through the gear but no mark on the gear. How do I line up the crank and timing chain?

align the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket timing marks with the tabs on the timing chain tensioner, if the crankshaft has been moved, turn it untill the mark stamped on the crankshaft sprocket is pointing at the projection on the tensioner, if the camshaft is off, install the sprocket temporarly and turn the camshaft untill the timing marks align

the cam gear has no dot stampped in it, just a hole through it in the lower part of the gear.

That small hole/dimple is your mark. (Unless you are refering to the hole for the alignment pin.??) Put it towards the mark on the other gear. If you are in doubt pull off the valve cover, remove plug and 1 and time it from scratch by watching the valve train and piston.
You may want to get a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Lots of photos and clear instructions you can take under the hood with you.
Good Luck.
