ka24de...died on me

So heres my delema,
my ka24de desided it didn't like it timing chain and spit peices of it out of my valve cover. lost power (of course) and pulled over. after I pulled the valve cover off I noticed it also didn't like one of my cams and broke off the sproket. I didn't tear into it any futher. so what I'm getting at is: Do I atempt to rebuild it? (posiable pistons, valves, ext. ext.) Or replace it? I read through the nebie stuff and didn't see anything related to this (sorry I haven't read through all the posts and hope this hasn't been discused before) just wonder what anybodys thoughts are on this.

thats pretty much up to you....i would say FUCK YEA, make that bitch strong as hell for future use of turbo possibly. Everyones timing chain goes bad iv had mine replaced well just because after 12 years of abuse i thought i should replace it. Cant hurt. it really comes down to if you do the work yourself or if your loaded with cash then it doesnt matter.

so tear it apart and maybe have to replace a whole bunch of crap or just get another ka24de from a junk yard and do my mods to that one? I'm not loaded with cash to spend on it and scapping my 240 would make me end my life. was thinking of going with the s13 red top but then again I realy like the ka24de...but I havent had the pleasure of driving a 240 with an sr motor yet.

Thats really up to you and what you plan to do with the car / engine. If your gonna stay below 350HP Id say just go get a long block and save yourself the hassle of building a motor.

Thats what I figured...
btw how many miles did you get out of your timing chain before you replaced it? and was it making any noise before?

They all make noise, it's the shitty tentioner, but the tentioner doesn't affect strength.

Yes its up to you... Only there is 3 ways you can go here... you can either keep the engine in the car, then take off all the rods and arms around the oil pan and remove the oil pan... then remove head and other crap on top and just have a block sitting there.... then just unbolt the rod bolts from the bottom and push the pistons out to the top... The get a strong set up for maybe future turbo and put those bad boy back in... I suggest you keep the stock crank because that thing hold up to 600hp because its shotpeened. Might as well get a nice head gasket like those greddy metal ones and polish your head and get stronger cam springs. Replace what broke with stronger parts and ready to go without the hastle of removing the engine from the car....
Or you can go the hard way and remove the engine and rebuild it that way.
Third option you have is getting another KA from a junk yard, and rebuilding that bad boy from scratch on an engine stand or something, i hope you have a secondary car to drive because this will take time. Or get another KA and take it to a shop and they will do it for you.
I plan on doing just this.. getting another KA engine and strip it then build it up while driving my stock KA 240. Its not hard to rebuild engines, and i have done a couple engines without pulling them out, and i preffer over pulling because its to much hastle with the tranny and bunch of other crap.
Good luck and keep us up to date.

How many miles did you put on the engine? and how hard do you run it?

or you can swap another engine in (from a j yard) and rebuild your broken one. But it is a lot of work since you need to swap engines 3 times.
1. Get the new one out of a car at jyard and put it in ur car
2.Pull the one in your car for rebuild and then eventually put it back.
3. To put it back you need to get the working one out of the car.
You don't have to swap the motor that you might build right away. You could blow the stock working one from j yard and then swap your monster rebuilt one.
Ohh yeah you also could get a sr, ca, or rb anytime. But I would prolly keep the ka. I like them now, strong block, lots of torque, higher displacement, and is good for any sport.

From the way you have it listed, you are better off buying another engine, it sounds like even if you intend on rebuilding it, there will considerable damage, secondly, depending on whether it is an interferance ingine or not, you could be looking at total valve damage. Next time change the freaking chain, it may cost you a lot, but it is definately cheaper than buying another engine.

well I got 146,000 miles off it...hard miles I might add. I new the f&*King thing was going out but I thought (theres the problem right there) that it would last just alittle longer...well I thought wrong
I found another engine 32,000 miles on a crashed 240 for $700 delivered to my house. I know I can swap them out but then I got the other one gust sitting there saying "if you build me, I will scare you" and if anyone says there 240 has never scared them they drive like pussys. I got it cleared with the old lady to drop a little cash in my rebuild project...helped rebuild a couple of engines before on some fords but never atemted this before. so any help would be nice guys thanks

You lucky bastards that find 32k KAs piss me off!!!!
lol. Go with the 32k. IF anything, you have a reliable engine that you can drive while you rebuild the other. Make sure you aren't getting ripped though. Good luck.

thats what I'm going to do. I already have the engine ordered after I put that in I'm going to rebuild the other one...from the ground up. might take me ahwile since I dont have the cash for all the parts but I figure I'll get a few of them at a time and when I have ALL the parts I need then the fun starts :)

does anybody have $900 for me?? i swear it'll go to good use..
i'm gonna be lookin at finding something to either rebuild or something i can use while rebuilding what i have.. its been about 3 months of looking around for options in terms of going ka-t or sr20det or rb25det and so far i haven't changed my mind on being impressed with the ka-t.. i'm hoping to have everything done by this time next year but there's still lots to learn..
