I would first check to see if both lock/unlock switches work. If none of them work, the problem could be with the harness at the relay module (you said they do lock when the car is put into drive, so you can rule out a bad fuse). I don't recall where it is located but you can easily find it by listening for the relay module to click when the doors lock when you put the car in drive. You can also pull the lock/unlock switch out from the door (it should just pop out) and see if the harness for the switch is plugged in properly. Use a multi meter and check to make sure the orange wire on the plug is showing 12volts. The white wire and the blue wire should only have 12volts present when you are pushing the switch to lock or unlock the doors (white=unlock, blue=lock). Start with that and let me know how you make out.

a common problem is the door lock switch on the door panel gets corroded and needs to be replaced. you can remove the switch without removing the door panel cheap fix

Do both the drivers side and passenger side switches not work? I had a problem where the driver's side stopped working, so I switched the switch with the passenger one. If they both don't work, you can rule out the switch itself.

im sure this reply is way to late but, forkliftguy had said that you could rule out a bad fuse, however he was incorrect, i have 95 grand am (though i was the cause of this), i believe it is the security fuse i had caused to blow that made my lock switches stop working, just thought this might help anyone that has this problem and reads this post

I have a 93 Grand Am and I had the exact problem. it was the fuse. its a 15 amp. It would lock putting it in drive but wouldn't work with the door switches.

same thing happend to me only i dropped a penny in the cigarette lighter. Locks quite working but worked when i put it in drive. The cigarette lighter and locks run on the same fuse (or so im told, im not much of an electronics expert)
