My 2001 Elantra quickly overheated and (died) on the freeway on Monday. Service department quotes $8,000 in repairs for a whole new engine. This car is 3.5 years old, has 50k miles on it. They (hyundai, not the dealership) are demanding me to produce proof for EVERY maintenance performed on the car before utilizing the Warranty, and before this weekend no less. I understand replacing an engine isn't the same as a headrest and deserves scrutiny. Does anybody know what exactly would void America's best warranty?

First welcome to the Hyundai Elantra section.
Now you will need to provide us with a bit more detail than what you posted. The service department quotes $8000 in repairs for a new engine, but else did they say. What exactly is wrong with the engine and why would they want to ask for proof of maintenance. Did you install any modifications to the engine? Did you install a air filter (even though they can't void the warranty over that), still it doesn't make sense. Have you ever taken the vehicle to Hyundai for servicing, if yes then they should have computerized records of your visit and what was performed. If its eslewhere and it is deemed that you do need to show them proof then It might be hard especially on short notice. Which by the way, why are they giving you such short notice to gather the proof? Seems to me that its the dealership more than the higher ups in Hyundai that are asking for the proof. There have been a few cases of dealerships in Ohio, Penn and California that were doing this. The customers did in fact take it to arbritation and won in Penn and Cali but not in the Ohio case.
If they insist on the proof and do not give you more than adequate enough time to get it, then maybe your only recourse is to get a laywer and try to get them to extend the timeframe to gather the necessary documentation of proof.
Keep us posted on the outcome.

That is the crux of the biscuit. Otherwise there should be nothing that needs doing except an occassional air filter on your car and change the coolant but even that could go 50,000 without terminal velocity and a subatomic breakdown of the engine. It is more than likely that some tech ruptured a hose or didn't tighten the oil lug nut enough and you ran on no oil and burnt out the engine or the oil pan went or whatever but a car with a cracked oil pan or no oil is going to give you a hint of a problem. I wish you the best. I'd hate to have to deal with Hyundai and the STEALERS should be working for Al Queda. Same moral fortitude. I'd call the Attorney General for your area and pay a visit to him and have him call up Hyundai. You might want an independent station to analyze the situation but then again that's more money. Final word. I wouldn't trust a STEALER as far as I can throw a piano with a broken arm and a 100,000 mile guarantee is wonderful if you don't have to use it - otherwise even if they do fix it your out a car and the cash to rent one. Good luck with this. You have my sympathies.

If memory serves me right the Penn case was exactly one year ago around Christmas time (I remember, cause we joked about getting a new vehicle for Christmas). I would think you can find the info on the Attorney Generals website in Penn. I'll go snooping around and see if I can did up the old threads in that other forum  and see if theres mention of the case name/dealership, attorneys etc.
