Hi All,

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. Did a quick search, and couldn't find anything... so here goes....

I was recently at IKEA in London (so this only really applies to UK people... although IKEA is around, so may be available elsewhere). Well, anyway, while I was walking around, I saw a really good display cabinet, which I'm thinking of getting for models.

It's pretty cool, only £35, and stands around 5 foot tall. You can get lighting for it too, but I need to look at the options there. The shelves are spaced a little widely apart, but might be able to make a plan there.

Nice thing is - it looks good, keeps dust out mostly, and is a great price.

For details, look here: IKEA DETOLF Cabinet (http://www.ikea.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=7&langId=-20&productId=11638)

Let me know what you think, and if you have any other recommendations for this sort of thing.

Regards,
B

I've put a couple of those together for friends, they are nice, and very inexpensive for what you get. But, be aware that the four vertical edges do not touch so a significant amount of dust can still get on the models.
There is another smaller glass door wall mounted display case at Ikea that sells for about the same that does a better job of keeping dust out. It works well for 1/18, 1/24 and smaller models. It has a light color wood frame. Not sure of the name though. - Mark

The gap appeared not too bad on the unit I saw in the shop. What would you think of using marine sealer or something? Would that work you reckon to seal the gaps (obviously, not on the door...)

I considered using some strong clear (non-yellowing) packing tape to seal the edges. But it was still very visible as the case is a very clean design, and still the door would let dust in.
You might consider getting a curio type cabinet, (you won't find it at Ikea). They usually have better dust control. They are a bit more money, but the quality will be better too.
The Ikea one is fine for die-cast, but anything delicate or hand made deserves better in my opinion. - Mark

That is exactly what I use, but as mentioned, it isn't very good at keeping the dust out.

Thinking of adding 4 further shelves in the spring, it's almost full, here's the 'Supra Shelf'..

These are Ikea Bertby Cabinets which I prefer as they hold loads more 1:24 cars.

Check your wall anchors. Don't want to put those mini-masterpieces in jeopardy.

I use Ikeas CD/DVD/VHS wall cabinets. If you set the shelves up at CD height, than you can fit a boat load on them.

Yikes! Thanks for the info. Luckily my Bertby came equipped with the correct screws.

I like how you recessed those cabinets into the walls Hiroboy. Looks sharp!

They are not recessed into the wall at all, just the camera angle, making it look like that :)
