What Type Of Gas to Use

I had someone saying that you don't need to be premium gas into the eclipse.

I have a 01 GT V6 and I do put premium gas into my car because I think its better for the car than regular unleaded. But my friend says I'm wasting my money and that regular unleaded won't affect the performance of my car. Is he right or wrong?

Your friend is right you do not need to put premium into your car. I don`t think the compression of your car`s engine is high enough to need it. It wont hurt your car of course but your wasting your money. It will say in your owners manual and on your dash if you need to put premuim in your car otherwise though just stick to regular unleaded. The only way you will need premium in your car is if you turbo charge it or something.

This is true for certain cars, even the same model. Some cars of the same model react differently to octane levels, as well as ethenol. The rule of thumb that I usually use is that the first tank of gas should be consistant to all the others you put in it. If the first tank was premium, i would generally put premium in it. My car does not like ethanol, not the 87 octain regular. It gargles and lugs in first gear. Not saying that all eclipses are like this, but thats my 2 cents.

My Manual says 89 or higher and it also says it inside the gas tank door. Thats why I figured it needed premium and why I disagreed with my friend, because the manual and the car says otherwise.

Well if it says 89 or higher just put 89 in then it`s cheaper than the 92 octane by a little putting higher octane than 89 is going to probably be pointless unless you have suped your car a lot. All octane does is just prevent the fuel from exploding to soon so if your cars stock and it says 89 obviously 89 will work efficently. Although you can still stick in 87 and the ECU should adjust automaticly to this fuel.

I'd say if Mitsubishi recommends 89 (which it does for the GT, 87 for GS and RS).. then I would use 89.

ok, now another question. I generally put 89 in, but sometimes the gas stations won't have it. I dunno why, so I wind up putting in 92 (I think thats the number), because its either that or run out of gas or put in 87. It doesn't really make a difference if I change the type of gas every once in a while because of that does it?

And my car isn't all done up or anything either. Just got it a couple months ago so pretty much everything on it is still stock.

tell me what you save by putting 87 octane in a car that suppose to use 89 or higher. you will pay about 10 cent more for a gallon. if you put 15 gallons of 87 octane in your car, you just saved $1.50. now the ecu will retard the timing and cause your engine to start knocking. so when you engine starts knocking, you can blame your friend for it. why not put in it what is recommended for your car?

actually if you'll look in the owner's manual, it says that you should use 91 (R+M) something gas and if it isn't R+M then 93 R or something like that, it is recommended b/t 91 and 95 no lower, no higher, if you go lower in some cars it will cause it to backfire while decelerating
it says 89 is only ok IF there is nothing else, once or twice won't hurt, but you should have 91...

at least thats the 2003 manual

oh man ive used 89 in my gt all the time, i really dont think it makes a difference

FairyDust
10-29-2004, 05:15 AM
ok ya its 91. I couldn't remember the number when I was posting. I'm a natural blonde, so don't forget that when I say something stupid lol. But basically I've been putting in what the manual says (91) or higher if thats not available. But I've had a couple times where there isn't that level available and no choice, unless I wanna walk lol.

and ya what eclipsed4utoo was saying about the $1.50 difference compared to problems in the future b/c your skimping on the gas doesn't make much sense. And I know my friend ain't gonna pay for my car when it starts having problems either.

I was just wondering if it was really true that you had to put what they say or if he was right.

Doesn't the premium also burn cleaner or whatever?

I am going to keep putting in premium in my 2003 Gt. If you add up the difference in cents per gallon it really isn't that much more. So I am going to do what the manufacture suggests.

i have octane boost when i don't have anything higher than 87 octane

eclipsed4utoo
10-31-2004, 03:42 PM
but if you read the label on the octane boost, it only boosts the octane by like 1 point. it says like 15 on the bottle but then theres is a little star beside it. always read the fine print

eclipsed4utoo
10-31-2004, 03:43 PM
so if youre putting 87 in your car, then its only getting it up to 88 or maybe 89. and now the pennys that you saved by getting the 87 octane, you just spend on buying the octane boost

I paid $2.22 a gallon for super unleaded the other day. I don't care though because it is only an extra $2.00 for me to put that in. I also go with Castro gtx instead of that shit motor oil out there.

2$ adds up quik though. If you think about it, you fill up probably every week and a half...well at least I do. So thats like about 6 bucks a month more you spend on gas. Not a big deal to many, but thats dinner to a college kid. I still would put in the premium because gas should be commin down after Nov. 2 cause of elections. Plus alot of is it psychological, if you know you arent putting the best gas in there is that voice in the back of your mind telling you that you could be just a little bit faster...lol.
And OOOO, if we are gonna start talking motor oil i would say spend the money to get full synthetic. I put mobile 1 full synth 5W30 in the winter, and if i can find it 10W in the summer cause I live in Nebraska, WIDE temp changes. I dont really notice a decline in performance up to the 2500 miles when I change it, but I REALLY notice acceleration increase just after I change it. Granted Mobile 1 is like almost 5 bucks a quart, so its like 35 bucks to change it with the filter. Plus its freakin race oil...no engine worries for me ever. Anyone know of anything better than mobile 1 let me know, its the best ive come across.

Eclipse66
11-01-2004, 01:33 PM
I can afford $6.00 extra a month for premium gas but I can't afford to drop $35.00 for a oil change. So I will stick to using Castro. My 97 Eclipse had over 100,000 miles and I never had any problems.

You should be able to feel the difference.
I wont even put certain brands in my tank.
Because they burn faster or they contain to much water.

smooth/clean burning:
MOBIL (highest octane)
76 (highest octane)
chevron (highest octane)

FairyDust
11-03-2004, 06:56 AM
yeah I generally use 76 or chevron also. I refuse to use Arco, but its not just because of gas. But also because if they weren't so damn stupid and make their station so retarded my car wouldn't have gotten wrecked. Well probably not anyway. So I won't spend a damn penny at any arco. I'll walk first.

eclipsed4utoo
11-03-2004, 11:27 AM
i use mobil 1 5w30 also. i think what sold me on it was one day when i was watching car and driver and they were showcasing the Enzo. they said that ferrari will only warrant the engine if you use a special Mobil 1 oil. that was enough for me. and i believe many of the other high performance car companys recommend mobil 1

the best oil hands down is Amsoil. it beats out every other oil in all competitions. gas here in tucon is running about $1.95 for the cheap shit at costco and frys. they actually use good quality gas.

man, i have to run plutonium. gotta get them 1.21 jiggawatts to power the vlux capacitor. do you have any idea how much that costs! naw, but for real, gas prices are crazy down here in FL. 93 is 2.30 +/-. Amsoil is a very good brand of oil, but any name brand synthetic snould do the trick. Andrewken- if you read this take note- you should buy quality gas and oil before you blow your money on caliper paint. and get a good oil filter!

I tried a tank of each in my car to test this samet hing, I Had the dealer tank (which was reg) it knocked in 1st and 2nd gear. And then when i put Mid Grade in it it seemed to not be as bad, but Premium, i have no problems at all ('01 Eclipse GT)

thats my 2 cents

I started adding octane boost to my gas (93 octain)
the brand i use adds at the least 3 points.
I can feel my systems running smoother, gas burns cleaner,
check it out for your-self.
Los Angeles up to $2.60 for 93 octain.
