I am working on a 96 skylark, I tuned it up because it was not starting. It starts but only if you hold the accelerator down. It has a 2.4 high preformance engine with a distributorless ignition. It is a multi-port fuel injected fuel system. Any ideas on to fix the prob?

I would check the tps and make sure that it isn't malfunctioning. I had a problem with my engine surging and a high idle on a cold start. The tps requires a star tool but it only takes like 5 minutes to swap out and it also has a single plug harness. Reason I think it's the tps is because if you depress the throttle it will start which makes me believe that the tps is telling the engine computer that the pedal is in the wrong position.

Thanks for the input, I'll be sure to look into that!
I wasn't sure if it was the tps, the air idle, or the timming.
Got any more suggestions?

we have a 91 that was doing the same thing...it had been sitting for a long time after having the alternator/battery replaced. It was jumpstarted, and we drove it home, no problems...We tried the very next day to drive it again, and it acted like it was running out of gas, then would die. We put gas in, because the gauge doesn't work(we dont think-not sure) Still had the same issue, would run, then die...we would have to really pump the gas to get it to start, then would run rough, then run fine, like nothing...We replaced the fuel filter by the gas tank, replaced the MAF sensor, new plugs, replaced the O2 sensor, replaced the coils and the module they sit on. We bought our parts at pick n pull because the new parts are way too much when you are guessing. I tried to pull the codes and we got 2 codes...fixed the problem, erased the codes drove it for 50+ miles it still did its run not run thing so we tried to pull the codes again and nothing, so i thought what if the brain computer was out,so we went to pick n pull again $30.00 more dollars we chainged the computer brain runs great have over 100 miles on it no problem, now we also had to change the solynoid in the tranny on the drivers side got that used at pick n pull also the car was locking up the converter and when you came to a stop it would die because the torque converter was not releasing it was stuck in drive high gear, but with that changed the car runs fine drives fine im not afraid to drive it anymore, got this car from the original owner (old women cant drive anymore ) and it has under 80,000 miles on it she never went any where so this car is turning out to be a good ride, oh ya the speedometer would quit working and the air like they were hooked together found that problem to someone put a after markett radio in it and the back of the radio is so long it was pinching off the little hoses behind the radio so we pulled the radio out about 3 inchs every thing works great now, i just wanted to share this with every one on this board since i got help here i hope this will help some one

Hi,
I saw your post about your 91 Buick Skylark. And was hoping that maybe you might have some idea's with a problem that we are having. We bought this car from a guy that belonged to his mother. She got a new car and decided she wanted to sell this one. Anyway it's a 1991 Buick Skylark, and they had it setting for a couple of months or so we were told. We bought it and seemed to run fine. Then it started dying out at stops it would start again right away, we had had a problem with this on another car we used to have and I think it was the conveter was bad on it, when we had that van our mechanic pulled the plug on it and said that it was an easy fix to the problem and we wouldn't have anymore problems with it stalling at stops. We didn't have anymore trouble after that. So I thought I will check this on the Buick and disconnet the conveter (if that is the right name) and see if that fixes the issue. Well I found that it had already been disconnected, so I thought well I will plug it back in and see what happens. The car would not even start with it plugged back in. So then I disconnected it again, and it started right up. When my husband would drive the car it wouldn't stall on him at a stop, it just did it with me. Anyway so we continued to drive it and it was fine with the occasional stall at a stop. We then got 2 new vehicles and didn't dirve it anymore. So it sat up at my parents house and we were giving it to them. Then my sister was thinking that she may need a car, because she was going through a divorce and wasn't sure if she would be able to keep to van that she had. We drove it to her. (she lives in MN we live in IA) anyway we took it up there where it sat at friend of her's for a couple months and then she found out that she was going to be able to keep her van, and said that she would bring the car back to us. (by the way there was no porblems with the car stalling etc when my husband drove it up there, which is about 140 some miles) So on the day that she was going to drive it down here, she called and said that it was starting but dying out right away, and would start but not stay running. She then got it running and got about 3 miles maybe and it died. And wouldn't start again. So it sat about 2-3 hrs and she went back and it started she got it back into the town she lives and it died and wouldn't start again. We then drove up there to see if we could get it going, and we could get it started but it wouldn't stay going. We had to hook it up to our van to get it to start. After an hour when we couldn't keep it going we decided to give up and pushed it to her apartment complex. This was about 4-6 blocks away, we had the flashers on and the headlights. By the time we got there there was no lights no flashers working. My thoughts is that it has to be the battery or the alt. and nothing major. So since you had similar trouble with yours, just wondering your thoughts on this. I hope that I'm not bothering you with the long description of how this all came about. We are just getting very frustrated because her landlord is having a fit that it's sitting in the lot not being drove and we are 140 some miles away. Thanks for your time and any input.
