Fuel Injectors bad?

Fuel is fouling 3 of my 6 cylinders (1995 4.3L). All on the passenger side. I cleaned them and it ran fine for a while NO SERVICE ENGINE SOON light. That same side took a long time to warm up. I could keep my hand on the exhaust manifold on that side only. The drivers side got hot fast. After a while it wouldn't idle well then the Serv Eng Soon came on.

I believe that the fuel injectors triggered the oxygen sensor trouble code and serv eng soon light.

QUESTION: should I bother with the code (I do not have a code reader)or just replace the fuel injectors. The intake manifold does not allow for access to the injectors without some disassembly. If I remove the top of the manifold can I troubleshoot the injectors by listening to their sound(s). Is there another way to determine their serviceability?

Thanks in advance.

if you're going to try to tackle this job on your own ,I would recommend that you parked van in a comfortable working area disconnect the battery, remove the air intake from the intake plenum at the front side of the engine, from underneath the hood. remove the engine cover from inside the van and this job can be done virtually from the inside of a van it might help if you have any another set of hands although you don't really need it. the plenum cover is directly above the CPI unit and injectors . I believe after you remove a couple of wires vacuumhoses brackets and ten bolts you can gently tap on he pleum to release it . The CPI unit consists of the fuel injection pump and fuel injector lines that clip into the engine at each cylinder and is sold at GM and auto parts stores for round $270.00 . if you have some mechanical ability you can actually change it yourself , with a few sockets, in metric, screwdrivers ,a pair of pliers and a pair of the needlenose. the plenum will probably need new gaskets so that it can be resealed properly, once you've changed the CPI unit. be very careful not to drop any small sockets etc. into the intake ports once you remove the plenum.
after removing the plenum you will probably notice black sooty deposits beneath it. if you noticed one side a lot cleaner than the other that's an indication that the fuel injectors were leaking on that side or area . The CPI unit is in the center with six black plastic fuel lines running from it.
This C. P. I. unit has an Electrical connector that un clips at the top and two small wires that unplug at the front, remove these . There are two fuel lines running to the top that are held in by a plastic clip, be careful when you release this clip 'cause there may be some fuel that squirts out. inspect these lines for damage or leaks and if they seem to brittle replace them . I believe that the fuel injector lines snap in and out at each cylinder remove each one of these and then there are two bolts that hold in the CPI unit take them out and the CPI unit should be free.
(if you're going to do any cleaning underneath the plenum do it before you remove the fuel injector lines.) reverse the steps to reinstall pay attention to detail and delta drop anything in the engine cause it'll go right to the valves . The plenum surfaces should be scraped clean as well as the mating surface on the engine, install a new gasket and seals, make sure the o-rings are good and on the fuel lines before slapping them into place, and make sure that the plenum is absolutely airtight and torqued.
I would recommend that you spend the fifteen or $20.00 for a heinous or chiltons manual as this procedure is illustrated very well . I had to do this job on my 93 safari at 97,000mi.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Art,

Thanx, Your right that is what it was. One side was turning into a fuel swimmin pool. I finally found someone here at work who has done it before. He says all that fuel and soot may clog the EGR once I finish the repair. So I'll have to watch for that. Right now I am shopping for the best price on that assembly. My normal part house told me $300.oo. A guy on Ebay has it for about $225.oo. If I can get a decent price from where my job buys their parts I may get it from them?

I'm replacing all the brittle plastic lines and o rings so that I don't have to do this again. The van has 250,000 on it and I've only had it for a year. I'd bet it was the oem installation.

Never anything simple... Just my luck.

I've replaced 3 in 2 diffferent vehicles. I can do it in about 1-1/2 hours. I got an injector set on ebay for $180. They are actually common on 95's. There are no O rings on the injector set, and my EGR was fouled from the raw fuel.
Good luck

My local parts house sells me discounted parts and they quoted me $300.oo. Then my comanys suppliers came in at $290 & $301. It looks as if I'll try to match your $180.oo deal. I wish there was an alternative. Braided steel lines and aircraft fittings might be worth the money they want for plastic.

Update: to whomever it might help. I won an Ebay auction at 7am EST, I was the only bidder and it started at $125.oo + $10.oo shipping. The repair wasn't hard just tedious. There are two studs on the drivers SIDE that have "male" torkx tips. I bound two nuts together to removed them studs. It made moving the upper manifold half easier.

PS: disconnect the battery! because if you turn on the key fuel will flow quickly where your working.
