S-10 tune up

I just tuned up my '96 S-10 (V-6, 4.3) plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, even fuel filter. When changing wires, I took old dist. off with wires in tact and switched over as marked. Distributor cap is marked 3,1,5 right side at vehicle front, numbers going towards firewall, 2,4,6 left side. I repld. rotor and put back together. Vehicle runs worse than ever! It sat for about a year starting it almost weekly and going around block. I ran it for about 2 days before doing work. If this is the best it gets, I give up on Chevy's. I do have exp. with automotive esp. tune-up, and have done everything I know to correct problem. Distributor has no timing adjustment, and I reset computer when service engine light came on. I have never seen a distributor with #1 in center of wires. (Electronic Ignition with flat top, flat sides and round up & down). Can you help me please?!?!?!?!

You took the distributor out or just the dist. cap?

I only took off/repl'd. dist. cap & rotor. I did some more checking and found 2 bad plug wires. You wouldn't think that would happen with a new set, but I guess it happens. The truck runs great and gets 18-20 mpg! Thanx all!
