Sorry, but they are wasting their time,it would seem. The laws have already been passed....the fact that they don't apply until April does not mean that they are still open to debate.
Anyway...if protests made a difference the govt would make them illegal.

credit to moppie for the info - I checked it out on the govt.website,it's a done deal.If they want to lower the road toll they should be a bit tougher on the geriatric fuckwits who are way past holding a licence.

If it's anything like over her, the govt. needs to get it's head out of it's arse and spend more on the roads and driver ed. Less than 50% of road revenue goes back into the roads here :(

How about improving the roads.
Just to prove a point can anyone think of one positive thing to come out of this law change

Heres another crazy policy I just remembered.
Increasing petrol tax 5c over the whole country to pay for upgrading the Auckland Motorway.
Only like 30% of petrol tax goes towards motoring anyway.
Grr damn north islanders.
Declare sth island independence well keep out resources and you can have all the politicians

damn aucklanders maybe......
a certain Cap'n of ours has taken to making inflammatory statements in his sig about all areas south of the Bombay Hills.....
I reckon we should go up there, liberate FTO girl(better bring moondog as well,he seems o.k.,but if he's not, FTO girl knows how to keep him under control),then skip back over the bombays, blowing up power lines and scattering anti- tank mines as we go.The Aucks will be stuffed if they can't drive down here.......ever see walking shoes for sale in Auckland?
With the Dorklanders safely under control,we will have enough high-quality(Taranaki)dairy export income to live comfortably, and still afford a few hundred coils of razor wire, just to be on the safe side.If we round up all the useless politicians, commodore drivers and breakfast radio hosts,we could drop them over the border into the newly created third-world republic of Auckalofa, thus freeing up even more resources for the rural heroes.
Naturally, there would be democratic free elections for the Presidency of New Improved Zealand, but if anybody else's name appears on the ballot paper,Iwill have them shot to ensure a fair result.

Sorry but I am for this rule- I think Jap import cars are mediocre compared to thier NZ New equivalents.
HOWEVER exceptions SHOULD be made for the the performance cars that make this country famous like the NSX, Skyline, Supra, Gen III RX-7 and 300ZX.
I kinda hope they open the flood-gates to used imports from Europe, simply because it would mean MORE PEUGEOTS!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I still think that this ban is a good idea IF they make that magical exception for performance cars, mainly because every road fatality I see involves a Presea or Corolla LX thingee.
Still I willl be glad to seee the back of some Jap imports

I will stick my neck out here in this area and say that it is not the cars you mentioned that are involved in the majority of fatalities it is HONDAS the majority of major road fatalities in New Zealand the deceased person would be in the honda (the worst being the CRX)
there is no malice intended in what I have said, I am simply stating the facts.

YES!!!! We only have to remember back to last year when those 3 teens were killed when thier CRX was struck by a logging truck.
Then there is the City, pre 92 Civic, pre 89 Accord, pre 93 Prelude and eariler Integra's
but in all fairness the later models are pretty bloody solid

Any hatch that gets hit by a semi is going to have issues with death :D
Interesting stats on the Hondas... of course, Hondas are a minority in Australia so the stats here wouldn't support your argument. :p
Then again, I remember driving a '70s Scorpion and getting hit by a Volvo in the rear. The Volvo flew to pieces and one of the kids in it was really badly hurt. The Scorpion had the bumper pushed forwards a few centimeters and I was unhurt. Go figure :)
All or nothing - either the car passes the impact or it doesn't. Just because it's a performance car shouldn't be an exemption. Thats why the GTRs etc here have to meet Aussie impact standards. Of course, if the roads were better and driver ed was improved, you could fix the issue just as well :)

I for one would like to stick up for CRX's.
Owning one I always hear about how unsafe they are, I accept that theyre not the strongest cars on the road but especially the del sol passed all crash regulations set at the time.
That logging truck example is not really relevant, name me one car that can be hit from the side by a logging truck at 100kmh and anyone get out of it.
For another thing NZ like most countries except for america Hondas are not in the majority on the road.
How is banning these cars going to make the roads any safer, take me for example. A del sol was what I wanted to buy and it took me aalong time to find one but eventually I did, now with this new law del sols wont be able to be imported, does that mean that if I was looking in a years time instead of a few months ago that I would go out and buy a 1997 car? Of course not I couldnt afford it now and I certainly wont then, I would go out and buy a 2G CRX which is ultimately a less safe car. NZ is too small to influence the world market the 96+ cars so theyre not going to get any cheaper.
This will influence the safety of cars on NZ roads, itll make them worse for the next 15 years until all the 92-96 cars are destroyed over time.
This will affect european cars as well, its not good for anyone unless you are Ford or Holden.
The problem with the NZ road toll is not what the government is focusing on, its because of the bad roads and unskilled drivers, not the cars which are the safest weve ever had

Renault Laguna II, Volvo's, Saab's later model Merc's, Peugeot's, BMW's and VW's
But really I don't think they should ban ANY European cars because they have had to go through tough regulations all throughout Europe
Then there is the issue of not enough cars to go around which is nothing really because we all know that Jap Imports are still far outnumbered by NZ New cars and then there is the big rush of cars coming in trying to beat the deadline, and lets not forget by 2010 depreciation would have hit hard on most Jap imports (Post 1996) putting us back to where we are now only with a lower road tolldue to teh high amount of stronger cars.
Let's all not forget taht Holdens and Fords are all NZ New which means of course they won't lose out.
But I benefit nicely from this rule (1. Because they don't have 6O7's in Japan and 2. I am only living here another 2 1/2 months) so I guess that you guys think that my opinion is irrelevant

Jimmy_11_cars:
I think your forgetting one point.
This new law isnt going to result in more post 96 cars in the country or make them any cheaper all its going to do is lower the number of 92-96 cars here.
No more people will drive 96+ after the law than before it, more people will have to drive pre 92 cars though.
Eventually (10 years or so) there will be no difference from this but until then more NZers will be driving cars that arnt as safe.
And then theres the point that lots of people will lose their jobs because of it, not just car dealers, itll be people that import them, wharfies, people who compliance them etc etc

Now feel free to dispute it all you want, but I was in the Scorpion and you were in another country, so I guess I know who's got an idea and who's sprouting BS in this instance :finger:

hmm..a truck coming at 100km/h is pretty scary..though..
come to think of it..once when iwa s in my dad's 96' SAAB 9000 CDE V6, I was in the back seat, and this truck ..well..somekind of huge construction truck came at 60km/h..and hti the rear right door..where i was sitting..I banned a little of my head against the side..my dad's car got pushed 10-15m's down the road sideways, and well..iw as like..arghhhhhhhhhhh..
and hell..u know how it fells?..at aorund 60km/h..it felt liek the car got hit by a plane!!!!...my whole body got 90% thrown onto the side even though the seatbelt was holding me back and then after the car stopped..i bgot thrown back to the left but luckily, I am onyl had few bruises that are not really noticible on my head and right shoulder and body where the seatbelts were..
and do u know how safe the SAAB was?..I opened the right door after the truck reversed off..and the car opened like it was new..just harder to shut aftre that's all
but all i can say is..100km/h..that's hard to live through though..maybe u won't die but u'll get internal injuries, but to my experience..i'd say most euro cars getting hit sideways at 100km/h by a truck..very low chance of surviving or coming out un-hurt

My 3rd Gen civic didn't stack up too well, with 2 seperate incidents. front left collision, cause this stupid P plater, decides to pull out right infront of me from a servo, onto a major hwy. She came out with a bit of a dint on the guard above her tyre. I come out with whiplash for 3 months, left panel stuffed, lights, front bumper stuffed :(
Other incident. Parked at a traffic light, get hit in the back by a 95 shape commodore. Get thrown foward....not good for neck already
Bottom half of the back of car all pushed in $3k damage....number plate fell off the commodore that's it.
Top one was bad though...freaked me out...almost ended up sliding into a parked semi-trailer in the middle lane :(
