Isn't the shift lock activated when you press the brake pedal? In my car that's how it works but you're right, the key has to be on as well.
What actually broke? I thought the shift lock was just a relay/solenoid with a shift lock control unit.
Mine makes an audible click when you press the brake pedal and the car is in Park.

that is when you have the key in on, but i think it has two of them see cause when you have the car with the battery and put key on and try to change the gear you can't without putting the brake right? Well In my if i don't put the battery on i can move the gear without the brake but that not the problem the problem is that It a black "thing" that has two srewes and on it it has a spring with it has a gold metal which goes from the shift to where the radio/ ac is that thing broke so now with out it the problem is without the key i can move the gear and i was wondering if it affects the tranny without it I mean try to move your shifter without the key and you won't but i broke that and now i can is it bad to not have it OOOOOOOO I almost forgot you know when you can take off the key right in park but since i broke it i can take out of drive or any gear does it affect the tranny

It won't affect the operation of the transmission. I'd think that worst case, you've just affected the shift-lock functionality.

Well I don't think it will hurt anything. The shift lock is mainly a safety feature (keep a small kid from shifting the car out of park?).
