how to prepare milliput

as u may have read i applied my body kit to the 66 beetle using milliput, i was wondering wat is the best way to prepare this for painting?

Sand it smooth and then give it a coat of primer to check for imperfections.
Once any imperfections are fixed, prime it again and allow primer to dry.

Ta-da! Ready for painting.
