Beefing up '81 Omni for dunebuggy...need tips

My friend Andrew and i found a 1981 Dodge Omni on his farm and it has about 77000 miles, but the interior is garbage. The car has been sitting in a clearing on his family's farm for nearly 5 years. We decided to make a dunebuggy, but don't know a whole lot about the 'proper' ways to beef up the Omni. I did hear about a Shelby Omni that was turboed, but is that overkill for a dunebuggy??? Tips on the build up or stories on a similar one would be appreciated. Thanks
