Problem w/ tundra 2004 suspension

Hi All,

I purchased a new Tundra SR5 in August 2004. Since then I have put a Camper Top on it and installed two tool boxes. (Approx weight 450 pounds)

After I installed the camper and tool boxes, I have noticed that my rear leaf springs are compressed about 2-3 inches. The leap springs are compressed such that when I am driving at night cars are flashing me to turn off my High beams, when I am only using my Low beams. (Which I am sure that they are quite displeased at me when I flash my high beams back at them......)

The SR5 Payload is advertised to be 1750-1800 pounds. At 450 pounds I am only at 25% of that.

I have expressed my concerns about this to my Toyota Dealership. To their credit, they agree with me that the leaf springs are compressed, but are reluctant to correct the problem at this moment. But they are going to contact Toyota INC. to see if other dealerships are reporting theis similar problem.

If you are having the same problem please contact your dealership and request that they submit a “Billet for Information” to the Toyota INC folks and to contact the Toyota of Grapevine, TX dealership. This will start to raise some flags at Toyota INC.

Does anyone know what the safety requirements are for the max. amount that a leaf spring can be compressed??
