if they are real then you can make it fit a super wide tire making your weelbase wider to give better traction but most are just for looks.

Actually I read an article and they were saying something about wider wheels helping in some type of cumber, but also takes away another. Basically knowing the right size of wheel can find you a good center point, too big of a wheel is not too good, and too small of one is bad. And they also look tight as hell, Oh, and if you do like most and put those fat wheels on the rear and smaller at the front, this induces understeer, or is it over steer, one of the two.

under steer, the rear wants to go streaight , front can't overcome the rear force as u turn, hence understeer.

wider deep dish wheels create problems on the suspension geometry and your car is not as responsive or agile

you will notice most HIGH performance race cars or street cars actually use the opposite, instead of having a huge lip the contact patch is inwards of the lugnuts as much as possible therefore having the majority of the tire over the suspension/Steering instead of away from it

Most racecars also alter they're suspension links to be longer though. I know what your saying and technically a higher offset is better but I would say the handling benifets of having a wider track outweigh the bump steer and geometery problems. how does a lower offset affect geometry anyhoo?
