Redline?

I was wondering how the redline limiter worked and why it can miss sometimes? Because one day I had someone rev up my engine so I could hear what it sounded like from the outside, and I told her to redline it (around 7000), and when I asked if she had got it up to the 7, she was like "oh yeah I got it up to the 9". I was just like damn, hope that didn't break anything.

No way the limiter went to 9 grand. Especially sitting in place. If it would have hit 9000rpm and been held there your internals would be scattered in pieces.

As for how it works it ECU controlled. When the ECU reads 6200-6300(sohc) or 7200-7300(dohc) it cuts spark and fuel(I think) to prevent the engine from revving any higher. I have hit my rev limiter several times without incident. It doesnt sound good but you'll know when you hit it.

she lied, rev limiters are set by springs and your ECU, to rev past 7300 rpms, you'd have to get high rev springs and an ECU upgrade (i think)

Well I know she didn't lie (it was my mother), and it wasn't held there, it was just quick revs for a few seconds. I think the springs thing would only be if it needed to handle that much all the time. Try it yourselves!! rev it to redline and keep hitting the gas to the floor every half second. Sounds ridiculous by they way. Now obviously you shouldn't do it, and I'm not going to do it to see if I can get it to 9000 like she did because that would just be dumb. But I assure you it happened, if any of you have ever taken a POS and put a brick to the pedal until the engine blew, you would know it can redline for about 5 minutes before anything really major breaks. (in one of Toyota's engine tests they redline the engine for something like 14 hours straight) So if it's just the ECU, if you rev fast enough it can miss it then, I think I understand now.

It did not hit 9 unless you have an upgraded ECU with no rev limiter. Your tach may have said that, but your engine was not at it, your rev limiter cuts spark at 7300 rpm, so it also cuts power. Your engine will not gain RPMs without additional power being made.

Also, the stock springs are good till about 8300-8500 rpm, and I rutinly take mine to around 8000. The length of time at redline does not matter to the springs, so going 9000rpm for 1 sec opposed to an hour will not matter to your springs and valves as long as everything is in proper working order.
