Hi, .
I am having problem in my 1999 Honda Civic LX 4 dr Sadan Car
I lost my Gas Tank Cap, I was driving my car without Gas tank cap 1 day but no indication. I got one cap which is not honda Civic cap, but it fitted perfectly. Now after 5 days it started giving me Engine check light after starting car. This light comes any time after driving .5miles to 1 mile.....from last 2 days I am driving my car with proper Honda Gas Cap...but still problem exist.
I could be gas cap or some other problem...I went 2 mechanic they said they are not able to read my computer for this problem...

Pls help.

THanx & Regards,
Rashmikant Vyas

it's probably the gas cap. If there isn't a vaccuum in the gas tank it will trip your CEL. Next time you go fill up your tank listen for that whoosh sound.

If ya got the proper cap then your all good diso the battery to get rid of the engine light. See if it comes back, it shouldnt if you fixed the problem.

Don't have to disconnect the batter... just pull the hazard light fuse out for 10 seconds... this resets the ECU, and still leaves power to the radio (in most cases) so you don't have to reprogram your stations afterwards :lol2:

i know for a fact that under the hood there is a efm fuse, pull that out for a little while, but if the hazards work too thats cool

Yep... fuse box under the hood... right side, between the strut tower, and the fire wall.... the fuse diagram should show you exactly which fuse it is.

please do this with the car off or you might smell like bacon afterwards all electrical work should be done with the car off and preferbly the battery disconnected but if your worried about having to reset your radio stations make sure the car is off

When this guy bitches about his EQ I'll worry about it then. Helms is the best yes.

Disconnect the battery and then wait 30 secs, that resets code in most cars for idle and other small code problems. The gas cap was probably not sealing correctly and the fuel pump probably caught some air or something idk. Try the battry idea, if that doesn't work post again.

Disconnecting the battery will clear it as well as disconnecting the BACK UP fuse from the fuse/relay box on the right side of the engine compartment this will also clear you radio, so be prepared if you have anti-theft systems

MY RECOMMENDATION. Dont clear it immediately! Go ahead and check out what fault code registered so that you know what happened. To do so turn the key to ON, but dont start it. Remove the passenger side kick panel and find the double female connector sitting in the blue protective rubber covering. Use a wire to jump the two sides of the connector and look at the check engine light as it begins to flash. Tell me what the flashes were, and I'll give you the corresponding trouble code.

as far as I'm aware, OBD2 ECU's don't flash codes... they have a diagnostic port for an OBD2 scanner, not a jumper plug.
If he does want to get the code scanned... some place like autozone does OBD2 scanning for free.

I'm ont totally sure either, however I have a 2000 HX (OBDII) that I used this techinque on to find out my cyp sensor in the distributor was bad. I believe the car uses both methods, with the obd2 diagnostic port being on the other (drivers) side near the fuses.
But yes, you are definitely right about autozone doing obd2 scans for free.

try an auto parts store, they can read and clear codes also. if you clear the code and it comes back on there is a problem........ a loose/missing gas cap will set a p1456 code-meaning the comp thinks you have a fuel leak.... try autozone or oriellys or pep boys

What’s up everyone! I hope the mods don’t get too upset about me digging up a real old thread but it helped me out & I wanted to share my experience.

I got a CEL the other day, went to autozone & they printed out 2 codes for me:

TROUBLESHOOTING P1456
Evap “Emission Control Sys” Leak Detected
(gross Leak/No Flow)

TROUBLESHOOTING P1456
Fuel Tank Temperature Sensor Circuit malfunction

After doing a search I did what Beastiek2 & ridestreet84 recommended & disconnected the battery. No problem ever since. Thanks.
