Stock Eclipse GS-X 165 MPH plus?

A guy at work has a Eclipse GS-X with a huge fart can muffler tip. He said he lost his license because he was going 165 MPH. Can this car get up to that speed stock?

I dont think the speedometer goes up to that speed stock therefore the car would be maxed out on the rpms at the stock speedometer which is like 140 i think id have to look a my car. Plus i think his car would be very unstable at those speeds, but it might be possible if he had a lot of upgrades including a suspension upgrade.

the gst stops at 138, but the gsx has no comp. to stop it, so it can go higher than 140 , but not sure how much more than 140.

Mine wouldn't go faster than 140 with an intake, no limiter. 15mph faster is a lot, the difference between a dodge neon and a GSX in top speed.

Stock speedo goes to 170 or 180, I think the highest number is not the highest marking. At any rate, I got up to 150 in mine eventually with basic mods but it was a struggle. Its going to take at least double the HP of a stock car to do 165, but I Can't say that from experience. I never tried it again, too boring.

i had my speedo un-hooked when i got it back from RRE and that night i got it up to just past the redline in 5th. i have no idea how fast i was going but i hit the limiter around 5500 rpm with it hooked up. under full boost i can ping the limiter fairly easy and under heavy acceleration that is still comming. pushing 18psi to the line is pretty sic...

i know that a stock 1g gsx top out at 143

im sorry but i have a 97 gsx and there is no way that this car stock can go that fast

the fastest i have had my GSX with intake and exhaust was between 135MPH -140MPH and it took it forever to get their from 130. so im going to say this guy is full of shit. something else to consider im at 5000 ft. less air friction, but their is also less dense air going into the motor there for making less power. but either way he is still full of shit. my :2cents: :thumbsup:

They can be pretty bad. Its often a percentage based error, so as the speed gets higher it does get worse. Thats why I'd rather do 150 at the track than on the street, accurate speed readouts :lol:

That's what I thought, I've only done about 120-130. It's pretty bad traffic around here so I don't like to go too fast with other cars around. Digital speedos are more accurate right?

My speedo goes up to 160 and there is another line for 170.... I doubt it would get there!!!! lol
I've done about 125 mph and mine was really close to being dead on with a grand prix GT's because their limiter kicks in at about 110..after that I just saw his headlights...... lol
Ask your friend who lost his liscence what speed rating his tires have.... if they aren't close to or Z rated he was lucky at that speed.

There is a video of an Eclipse going about 170+ on the street. His stock speedometer went up to 170 with 160 being the last actual numbers on the speedo.

He probably installed his glow-worm guages wrong, I would rather see it on a datalog. ;)

It could be on a dyno.

I would hope that no dyno operator in his right mind would ever let the speed get that high, if the dyno in question would even do it.

o/b i did 150 in my 91 integra rs.....i havnt driven my talon all but once when i brought it home but im getting my license with in a month or 2 when the dmv finally processes my application for my shit back,

didnt look like that guy was even goin 170 at ALL. The fastest I've ever been was 160 in ucles SL55 AMG...and things are flying by incredibly fast. Didnt look that way in the video. Looked like he had fooled around with the speedo or something... As for that guy, hes full to his eyes in bullsh*t.

My bad, he actually has a GS-T, if that makes any difference? I don't know the differences between eclipses.

Just GSX is AWD and GS-T is FWD. That vid is bull shit.

when the camera looked up at the street lights it only looked like it was going 75mph

flu rad., Fal Fans,...etc.), and I decrease the Weight by a bit, the fastest I've driven my car is 135 MPH, that's not maxed out (I could've Punched it a bit more). My speedo reads up to 165 (Stock), I know the GSX has more HP than my car... so is that really possible for it to max out at 140? :confused: My car doesn't even max out at 140! and it's N/T! :screwy:

Some model 2g (Kevin might know off-hand) had a speed limiter.

Should be everything but GSX. GST for sure, and I expect the NTs have one as well. It comes down to tires. The GSX had tires rated to like 150 mph continuous use stock. The GSTs were only good to 120-130. I forget the actual ratings, but anyone with stock tires can look at the speed rating and find the corresponding max speed online. The NTs most likely didnt come with tires any better than GST, so I assume they also had some form of speed limiter. Doesnt mean that a car is capable of hittings its limiter, just that the factory decided it was unsafe to go any faster on the stock tires.

There is no way he got to 165. I have a 91GSX with a big16g turbo upgrade running 15psi along with other mods (susp. for sure) and have topped out at 157. So yeah i really don't think he did that

i got a stock 1996 gs and my top speed is 134 and it took forever to get there after like 125 so :-/

yea, you're n/a eclipse will max out. it maxes at 144 and it takes it a god awfully long time for it to build to that speed. and the mitsu ecu's are retarted, for the simple fact that one day you'l top out at 144 the next day only 135. i've had this problem all to often. i normally open my gs all the way up atleast once every month, and numbers are always changing. and as far as tires go i won't put anything less than z rated tires on it

not that it matters much, but dont forget that the drivetrain losses in the gsx don't let it have the top-end that the gst does, or so i've heard. so a gst probly reaches top speed easier than the gsx

ok, so what are the gear ratios? what RPM do you have to be at to equal what speed?

i can tell you right now that i hit redline in 5th with acceleration left over. the EGT was gettign way over the 900 mark where the warning was and i don't know if i want to do it again, but just to kill this argument i may just go unhook the speedo and take some pictures :)

even 110 is fast. i hit a rabbit doin that and well i'll i have to say is there wasn't anything left of the rabbit, and the same went for my front clip. well atleast there were recognizable pieces of my front clip left scattered down the road along with the small pieces attached to my fenders

Had a friend of mine do that just last week in a bright yellow lowered exploder in Iowa doin' 75mph. It pushed the front end in, lost both fenders, broke the windsheild, smashed the roof, blew the airbags out, radiator fluid everywhere... Not good.
