1995 3.8 Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement

Hi,

My Service Engine Soon light has come on very intermittently for the past 2 years now. When I scan the DTC (data trouble code) I always get [P 1361- EST signal not switching after enable] My Trans Sport would run just fine for months, then the trouble code would come back. All of this time, there was no problem other than the service engine soon light coming on. I would just clear the code, and away we went. According to the GM shop manual an intermittent code going off wasn't too much of a problem.
Just today, my mini-van stalled on the way home, and had a hard time starting. I got it started, drove a couple of miles and it stalled out again. Got it started and home. When I got home and pulled out my scan tool... there was the P-1361 code again.
I pulled out my GM shop manual and see that the flow chart leads either to the Cranshaft Position Sensor, associated wiring, or the Ignition control module (which sounds and looks like it is pretty expensive)
My question to anyone is.... Would the way to go with this be to just replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor, and if so, how hard are they to get out and replace to get in properly without the seating tool recommended in the GM manual ?
I read another post on this forum where another person had a stalling problem and one of the forum moderators recommended replacing the CPS. I'm pretty handy, but don't want to get in over my head getting the part out, and not being able to get the new one seated correctly.
Also, can anyone give me the GM part number for the CPS for my 1995 3.8 ?

Thanks in advance.

Wow I'm surprised no one has responded to this question in over three years. I have a 94 3.8 with the same trouble code, intermittent rough startup idle symptoms and SES light, especially on cold damp mornings. I replaced the spark plug wires and started checking the IAC ckt 423 and 424. I get 4.7 volts at the IAC bypass circuit (tan/blk) backprobing at the IAC connector (manual says 5V but what difference could 0.3 V make?) I also looked at the IAC connector and the two female connectors for this circuit were bent flat (strange!) so I pryed the springs back so it might better contact the IAC pins and reconnected. Still a rough idle. We've replaced the IAC once before but not sure if it was the culprit. Eventually the CPS had to be replaced too. Is there any way to bench test or positively identify the IAC as the bad part? Can the IAC ckt 423 424 be tested somehow under operating conditions to be sure the connector isn't the problem? Great board here, thanks for all your help and time with us DIY guys and gals.

There have been at least a dozen threads about CKPS after this 3 year old thread. RUn a search.
Forum administrators suggest that very old threads be quoted as a reference in new threads only, as ressucitating a very old thread as such can induce confusion as some not noticing the date will think it is new. Since your question is about IAC, I think you should restart it as a new thread, maybe as "DTC code 1361 and IAC testing".

Fair anuf! See new thread!

I have a 92 3.8 transport. the heater core went and i had it replaced. The nighti went to pick it up i got in and started it and shes running like theres a miss. i checked the plugs ,wires, coils and fuel injectors. I also replaced the mass air flow sensor. When i take off at either low or high speeds she misses like crazy. could the e.c.m have gotten wet? its also eating alot of fuel.

Welcome to AF, Sounds like plug wires off, switched or a bad spark plug. Look at the rear bank where to heater hoses were removed. In the future start a new thread, this one is unrelated to your issue, and way too old, I am going to close this.
