hey formula um i still have the light comming on so i guess the carb cleaner didnt fix it yet....i want to figure this out so the light isnt comming on when i sell the car

Not too sure on the EGR set-up of the 4th gens. but Did you pull the valve right out to clean it?? Sometimes ive even needed a screwdriver to get all that crap out of the valve, so just spraying carb cleaner might not do it.. Not recommending the screwdriver method but you might need to pull the valve out and inspect it..

oh, btw, while you have the valve out, its a good idea as 89 mentioned earlier to start the engine and let it run and rev it up once or twice to blow the rest of the carbon chunks out of the EGR track before you put it back in..

i think im going to just put in the blocker plates and take off the valve all together

not a good idea, i mean i dont want to sound uppy or anything, but putting the block off plates on is a redneck, shade tree mechanic fix. the car was designed to run with EGR, a computer controled car wont run right without it, you will have worse emissions, hotter running combustion chambers, and increased chance of running into detonation, as well as having to use premium gas. If youre gonna fix it, do it right.

The EGR on LT1's is only triggered for such short spurts that it will not really effect combustion temp's that much at all. Also plenty of cars such as mine have run just fine without one but I always use premuim anyway even before I had one,

yea, do it right and slap a blower on it.

maybe i'll just turn it in on the insurance while im at it anyway and say "the deer did it!" lol just kidding

DaMoNe6969

ide blame it on the deer..

but if that dont fly, I'll havto agree with 89, if your gonna fix it, fix it right

I know 89 your admitedly not familiar with the LT1 style blocks so I thought I would just explain further so it wouldn't be called "shade tree mechanics" to eliminate the EGR system from the LT1 when infact GM did the same thing themselves with the LT4. Infact GM supplies the GM block off plates GM p/n 10054880 and infact if any of the two should be running a LT4 should because of the more aggressive Cam profile. Also it will not raise combustion temp's because the LT1 design Vs LS1 and later designs takes its gas from directly after exhaust ports where the temp's of gases is much higher and more unlikely to have un-burned gas fumes VS later design farther down exhaust system where your more likely to find cooler unburned gas or oxides of nitrogen AKA emissions but since the more efficient and later used design eliminates the EGR system I don't think it would be considered a half assed job. Anyone not completely understanding this or wanting more info on the system is more than welcome to PM me. I have plenty of articles and website you can check out.

Also I recommend not using the GM block off plates because you can get the same thing at a much lower price by getting them from places like ebay.

do the 4th gens use an EGR cooler??

FormulaLT1

Not LT1's not sure about LS1 EGR system design.

well, i guess that makes sense, but i might point out that even the EGR on the LT1's that takes the gasses directly from the exhaust ports lowers combustion temps. because as hot as that gas is, its lower than the temp of combustion, and by being inert gas, that dosnt combust, it takes up space that would otherwise be used for more combustable material. so if there is less air and fuel in the cylender due to the existance of this exhaust gas, then the chamber burns cooler, and has lower emissions.

Well even though I have read the contrary to what you've just said about LT1 combustion temp's in Hot Rod, GM high performance and Corvette Fever. I don't want to argue anymore so I'm just going to make a "personal attack" on you and call you a "dummy". There now I feel better

um, not to call you out but out of honest curiosity i would like to know the article titles in those mags that said something contrary to my post, not calling you out, but im quite sure of the purpose of egr, and if they are contradicting it, i would like to know why.

I'll do you one better. Check this out.
Check out http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_EGR.html scroll down to the part about Removing the EGR. Also I wil get back to you with the exact articles but believe me I have read LT1 project's in all of them which they remove the EGR and air pump after installing Long Tubes and explain the reasoning behind it.

thanx man, honestly not calling you out, just that if im wrong i want to know why and not be wrong anymore.

Also this is the exact quote taken from the removing it section
"It does not make the engine run hotter because it is adding hot exhaust gases."

N.P, Man. I know you know your shit. Me and you have bumped heads on a couple of subjects here and there and have each learned that the other was right about 50%/50% split. So I have respect for you and your theory is corect in 99% of the cases but the LT1 system is not like everything out there its slightly different but don't worry even though I respect you I still think your a "dummy".

Also here's another quote taken from this site:
http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/42.htm#a12
"Blocking it off will lower temperature of the intake since the gases fed back through the EGR are very hot. Lower intake temperature produces more power, but the amount of gases that are passed through the EGR is VERY minimal and probably won't result in much (if any) performance gain"

Us GN people remove them to get rid of pre-deat. It deffinatly makes intake temps hotter. Even when closed. the EGR runners in the mainafold still transfer the heat.
