removing 96 grand am auto shifter

Hi! I was wondering how do you take off the automatic factory shifter on a 96 grand am se. I would like to put a aftermarket one on instead. There is a clip in the front of the factory shifter is that how it comes off?? Thanks for the help!!

If you're talking about removing just the auto shifter knob, then yes there is a small clip on the front of it, just take a small flat head screwdriver and pop it out, then just lift the knob straight up and it will come off.

Another Question. Do I need to worry about that enhanced traction system button (ets) on the shifter or can I just unhook it and it won't harm anything?

If it were me I would relocate it to a different spot, but as far as I know the button is just to turn the feature on or off and I don't think it has any real significance to the system other than that, i think you can just leave it unhooked if you are not going to use it.

Yeah I agree and I will probably just leave it unkhooked instead of rewiring it to another switch. Thanks again for the help. I was just mainly wondering if it was gonna mess up anything if it was unhooked.

Is this how I would install a aftermarcket shifter? Pry the clip from the front of the factory one and it slides off. Then just slip the aftermarcket one onto the bar and put the screws on with the allen wrench and the shift boot will slide over it. Does the plastic ring on the factory shifter stay on? Because my aftermarket one only game with screws and a allen wrench. Thanks once again!!!
