I like the original GT-40, it's one of my favourite cars. The mark 4, 2300 lbs, 427 side oiler... 200mph. Swweeeet.
The new one is going to be really heavy though, 3000 lbs dry. I think it's a little heavy.

The Esprit was sort of off course for Lotus though, they did light sports cars, and they did them very well.
Something I don't think anyone has mentioned, the heritage of the GT40 in the Saleen S7. I see shades of GT40 everywhere in that car, from the basic body shape, the 7 liter Ford V8 amidship, the very look and feel of the car.
It's going to be interesting to see the competition.

As much as I like the new 40s, they're gonna get their doors blown off. The only cars ever to beat the Gt-40s on the track were the 917s, and they went on to kill the open Can-Am series, because they were too powerful! Even then, the GT-40 still won Lemans in '69, even though by just a car length or two.

Unless they changed their minds. Ford canned the project in 96 because of their R&D plans for the upcoming model changes.
They might have reconsidered the project, but they are only building the GT-40 because it uses off the shelf parts, and they know it will turn a profit. And a few heads :D

The latest info from the NY Auto Show is that the GT-40 will be priced directly at the Viper at around $80-85K. Ford is considering several engines for the car, to make them as competitive as possible when campaigning the car at Le Mans. I am glad to see that Ford is back!

If Ford made the GT-90 it would have put them on top by far the car would have been the strongest V-12 today cuz its specs hit 235 mph man jst sucks that there not going to make it
so the new GT-40 will cost as much as the Viper what kind of engine will it have

They are planning a few, I've seen the standard 5.4L Mustang based modular V8, but with a supercharger, making 500hp or so. They are also considering a V12, based off the new powerplant for the Lincoln Continental.
They were also considering a Triton V10 based 7 liter powerplant, but I have no idea what sort of power that might make.

Don't get too excited, because Lutz has a project Corvette that is called Viper Killer. I will bet they will be right there with the Viper and the GT-40. It is good to see Ford back in the fight.

the competition between the GT40 and the Viper would be much more meaningful to me than against the Corvette. the corvette has evolved so much in the time that it has been around, if it keeps on this curve, it could be the top contender in quite a few categories... the new Z06 is faster and has better handleing than the old corvette racecars did. where as, the new gt40 will most likely get whooped on by a vintage one set up for the same thing. the viper is the wildcard in a race like this. we know what it can do, we know that they sell... but now there will be three major american car companies that have cars in relatively the same class to race... i think that i am just babbleing now... so i'll stop... the new competition that will be around in 2003 will be great!

The old GT-40's are very fast. So are the old Corvette Grand Sports. The Viper can't really contend at that level, it's just too heavy and doesn't have good enough suspension.
The C5 has very good suspension, and there is a lot of weight to be trimmed in that car. The new GT-40 is way too heavy compared to the old ones, but still considerably lighter than either of the front engined competition.

You are telling us that the old GS and GT-40 had better suspensions that the current Vipers? Are you talking race cars or street cars? There weren't enough GT-40's produced to call them street cars. What are you smoking?
The current Gen 2 Vipers have tested at 1.03 G's with the stock coil-overs (when was the last time a C5 or Z06 pulled that?). I understand tha the new SRT-10 wil equal those skidpad numbers, and will be even more forgiving than previous Vipers.
If you are talking racing, my friend converted a street GTS to an ALMS race car and placed 7th in the GTS class at Daytona and Sebring a couple of years ago (as a privateer).
The new GT-40 is targeting a weight of 3,000 pounds, so how is that too heavy? It would be very difficult for a street Viper or a C5 to strip off that much weight.
Please clarify what you are talking about?
Brad

I must confess, I haven't done too much looking into the 2nd gen Viper suspension. I do know that the current Vipers do not have as good suspension as the C5. They both weigh in at about 3300 lbs. My 924 weighs about 2400. Thats about the right weight. You can really feel the difference in the way the car responds, a light car is more nimble, brakes better, and has a better power to weight ratio.
IMO, a 3000 lb car is about 500lbs overweight.
My 2600lb 924S based 968 replica will murder any of cars we have been discussing, and it only has 400 hp. 450 ftlbs of torque too.

My question is, how does a thread about the remaking of a legendary Ford race car attract 3 or 4 different whiggers? This thing is a hotrod, not a rice burner :D
Hey, did ya know the new Triton V10 weighs less than a 302? SOHC, EFI... A guy put on in a Mustang, and added 20lbs to the weight of the stock car. It had the V6 in it before.
I think this would look good in a Cobra replica, give it a Tremec 6 speed, you have 310hp in a 2400lb Cobra. That's the sort of weight you need, because it does get hard to put down more than 400hp in a car that light, but you still get better acceleration than something like a Viper or Z06, plus the braking and cornering advantages.

They are going about it differently than the old GT-40, emphasizing power and comfort, instead of light weight, and responsiveness. It's supposed to be a Corvette/Viper killing flagship, not a competition car. If you want the comp car, get a race Saleen S7.

You must remember that the powerplant most talked about is the 5.4 wit supercharger. That would give it less tuner potential than a Viper or Vette. Also, the Cobra R only did 0-60 in 4.8 (Motor Trend) I'd only expect 0-60 in 4.0. These cars have the same base engine. Long live the Viper.

I am sure there will be some room for performance upgrades, but in most cases, I would bet that most owners won't do anything to their car. It is a car that is an instant classic. It has great performance, not the best on the planet, but way more than normal people are used to or would probably ever even use. It will be able to give any normal exotic a run for its money on the street. The chances of coming up against a Diablo or a 550 Maranello are probably pretty low.
The Ford GT is more in the class of the Viper, 360 Ferrari, and the new Lamborghini Gallardo. Up against any of those, I think it would give a good race and maybe even a surprise or two in stock trim.
After 3 or 4 years of production, if they make that many, I am sure there will be those that need more horsepower and want to make a statement with the Ford GT. Then you will start to see the serious performance mods.
But for the first 1000 or so made, they will be collector cars that will bring big bucks on the open market.

I don't understand why ford doesn't put a stroker engine in it. i seen actually pictures of a gt 40 at mustang unlimited. and my god, you don't know how short they are till you see a guy next to it (gt-40 = 40 inches in height) Now what about the GT-90? 90 inches? Maybe the new ford gt won't be 40 inches... maybe that's why there dropping the 40.
I agree with the old ones being better. What else could make 400hp for 24 hours, STRAIT! Vipers (I loathe vipers) wouldn't be able to idle for even 24 hours. and The ZO6 (btw one of the lightest v-8 powered cars ever) won't be able to do it either.
