motor mount

after reading the thread about tire hop and reading that better motor mounts will help, ive decided to look into a set before my motor goes in. i was on this website:

and they have like motor mount insert for the 2g and a motor mount kit. which do i need. both or what. if this is going to help the tire hop a little bit then i want to get it done right. i just want to have my car done right and final with this new motor going in.

just the inserts is all you need, its kinda a bitch to do. If you just put the inserts in the freezer, take all your mounts out of the car and cut the rubber center out without damaging the actual mount itself and then take the cold new inserts and they should press in pretty easily, it helps if you have a drill press or something that you can use to press the inserts strait in with but you can do it with jsut a rubber mallet too.

so can just get the inserts? i dont need to buy new motor mounts. or would it be useful to just get both now and out of the way since the motor will be coming out.

I dont see any reason to get both. The mounts themselves are steel and unless they are bent or damaged in some way, i dont think it would make a difference. I guess if you could get the mounts with no inserts it would save you the trouble of removing the old inserts. You should look and see if you can get the mounts with the prothane inserts already installed.

I think you're misinterpreting the terminolgy. The "inserts" the front and rear, which on a 2g are molded poieces that insert into the stock rubber mount to "fill in the holes." The mount kit for 85 is all 4 mounts. Thats the front and rear inserts, and the two side full replacements. The front and rear are tits to install, and do 75% of the work. The sides are a pain in the ass to install, your best bet is to have a machinist press the old inserts out. The new ones can be pressed in with a mallet and lube or a vice. The do the last 25% of the work, but add 200% more vibration. My car vibrates a lot with the full mount set, cams, and no balance shafts, and I dont really mind. Just feels like a race car. Some poeple can't stand it though. The choice is yours.

ok im a little confused, the set i looked at were all just the replacements for the rubber centers of the mounts, for all 4 mounts in my 1g and it was $75

On the 2g, only the sides are replacement inserts (what you call the rubber centers), the front/rear are molded inserts you add to the stock rubber inserts. I guess its confusing when everything is called an insert. At any rate, the full set of 4 rubber doodads for the 2g is 85 bucks. I also just realzed that I dont even know if this 2g is turbo or not, that certainly matters. And for comparison, on the 1g the rear is a full replacement piece like the 2 sides, and on the front is a molded insert.

so if you think the second one is all i need then ill go for those. cause the full kit just says that they are already pressed, so i dont know what that means.

I bought the inserts for mine at Jegs. They will help a lot...but remember, it's still FWD still it's still gonna have hop, just not as bad
