okay im lookin at a 92 explorer im not shure how many miles are on it but what would be some typical problems it would have? It has some rust issue under the doors. The dealer is askin $2500 it has all power stuff and the interior from what i can see looks good. Is that a pretty good price for that? It also needs tires. any thoughts would be great im just doin some research on the vehicle before I think of buyin it made that mistake on last car. Oh and does anybody know about what they get for gas mileage? thanks in advance

I have a 92 Explorer, bought in '97 with 60k on it. Paid 10k for it. Have had a few problems with it, though I wouldn't automatically not buy it. Minor problems I've had include the gas guage going out(I use the odometer to figure fill-ups), weird problems with the tachometer(not affecting anything, however), both front window gears needing replacement(got parts from guy in FL), tailgate wiper switch gone bad, needed to replace power steering pump recently(leaking), replaced radiator, replaced water pump recently(leaking)....
The engine threw a rod at 98k...bought a remanufactured one for about 2500 and put it in myself...the transmission went about 10k later and cost about 1400 to be rebuilt....the a/c compressor went out about 5 years ago and had to put in a new one....
Now that I think of it...I have had quite a few problems...I currently have 129k on it...in other words, I've put about 10k on it per year. Gas mileage is not great...about 14 around town..18-19 highway. Probably could be better if tuned by a pro...I just keep it running...
Hope this helps...
Phil

Three transmissionson in 5 years in my 92. Rethink your decision. And I did not even tow anything.
