Is there any advantage? I see you can change the springs in them.

They are far superior to internal gates. They have a bigger valve, but also have a large diaphram, so they move a lot of air but dont blow open. There is a wide selection of springs, which is certainly a good thing. But to speak plainly, they just work. I'll never ass around with an internal again. ;)

can you one on any turbo or is it specific turbo?

You mount it on the manifold, or on the O2 housing. Doesnt really have anything to do with the specific turbo. But the turbo needs to be setup for whatever internal setup you use. If its on the manifold, you want the internal welded shut. If you go with O2 housing mounted, you want the internal removed and bored out.

Going externally gated on a 16g is overkill, IMO. Sure, it's possible and it will work awesome, but I don't think it's necessary.

I would do it if at all possible! I'll tell you why. Internals on 16Gs creep if too small and blow open if too big. Takes a bit of work. Most poeple just dont realize it because they never go over 20 psi. Plus, if you go internal with the 16G, you'll always have it when you step up to a larger turbo. Its a good investment, even early on. Now, if youre trying to run 12s on a 10 dollar a week allowance from your parents, skip the external and spend the money on parts that will actually make the car faster and deal with the headaches of the internal.

Exactly. If you have big plans for the car from the beginning, skip as many steps as possible without ruining something in your ignorance! At the same time, many people think, "oh, I'll be happy with a 16g," and then decide three months later that they want a 50 trim :grinno:
