Steaming battery at 14 volts

Ok, I got my alternator replaced and new battery 6 months ago. After hitting a pot-hole, now my Battery Light has started to come on during idling, but not when driving. The idling seems low. I had it checked out at the shop when I went for inspection but he couldn;t find anything wrong. It's been like that for some weeks.

Today when coming back from a ride I noticed the 'Rotten Egg' smell and when opening the hood the battery was steaming. The voltage over the battery reads almost 14 Volts when car is off and almost 16 Volts when the car is running, lights on. My volt meter might be inaccurate, but at least there is a difference so the alternator is not completely dead.

Would the battery light come on at too high voltage?

Could the steaming battery be from the low idling, the car running off the battery(I was in a traffic jam)?

Could the low idling be from a vacuum leak?

Any suggestions?

I think it would be steaming because its too hot, theres too much energy being transferred in and out of the battery. Thats the reason why they overheat.

Did you have the battery checked? I'm thinking bad battery or something, or worst case your alternator could be over charging. I'd start with battery myself.

put a volt meter to it. i would say the alt. is over charging

almost definantly the alternator. i've had this happen in a nissan pickup. you can drive around for quite a while like this, but eventually you'll start noticing things getting dimmer or brighter depending on engine rpms. . . and that's probably not very good for things wanting a more stable voltage

voltage regulator has shat itself.

by the way that rotten egg smell is hydrogen, put off from the battery, to conferm this light a match. (just joking)

Your problem lies within your voltage regulator.....if your alternator is new....then go return it because thats your problem. The regulators are internal in our alt........and they are right...the smell is the sulfur....the battery is overcharging and its boiling the acid......get that alternator fixed asap because your ruin your battery.
