99 GST upgrades

Well, my friend bought a 1999 GST for $5,500.00 for a project for us to do. Well, all of a sudden a piston decides to crack and we had to get the engine rebuilt. Now it is starting to slip gears (Auto) and the turbo is making some noises. The mechanic that rebuilt the engine said something needs to be done with the tranny and the turbo may be going soon. So my question is, which tranny should we purchase (most bang for the buck) or should we just have it rebuilt as well? And should we buy an aftermarket turbo, stock from the factory turbo, or just get it rebuilt as well?

Thanks

Since it's auto, you might as well put in a race tranny if this is going to be a track car that you plan on having run lower than 12s. I know little about autos, so I will let someone else refer you to the tranny you need.

As far as turbos, if you are turning this into a track car, again, you're going to want a much larger than stock turbo. What are your goals for the car? If you are putting stock internals back into the engine in the rebuild process, you might want to consider the amount of horsepower you want to push out of the factory pistons/rods. 400 hp is generally fairly safe on the stock motor, as people have run more than 500 before (who knows how long though ;)).

A popular street turbo these days is the Evo III 16g--capable of 400 hp on a well-tuned car with fairly quick spool for its flow rate. Do some research on it as a viable option...

We're just going to have a show car with it since NOPI comes by every year. But we have to get it running right first. So basically we want a good auto tranny to drive every day with maybe a little more kick in it. I'm more of an american car guy, so my knowledge of foreign cars is very limited.

As for trannys, I don't even know if there is an upgraded one. Stock will get you pretty far with a tranny oil cooler and a shift kit.

As for the turbo, I would strongly suggest not getting another T25 (stock). You can get a Big T28, a direct bolt-on for about the same price as a T25 retail. Otherwise, if you are prepared to modify a few things, you can get a 14b or 16g, both of which have run 11's, which means you could run 12's.

In any case, you can have some suggestions but mostly you are going to need to research. A mitsubishi turbo like the stock 14b or a 16g which is a common upgrade needs an install kit, that's the modifying.

Can I take the stock turbo off and replace it myself at home?

so you got an auto as a project car? sorry but no one will take you seriously IMHO

Well I think if he is serious about and hes running low 12s then i think people would take him seriously...id rather have stick IMO, but its his car and he can do whatever he want with it.

Like I said, all show and to drive around. It will be fast, hopefully low 12's. We're about to purchase a Garrett big T28 turbo but the transmission needs to be done a.s.a.p. I think we're just going to get it diagnosed and rebuilt. Possibly a shift kit?

I wouldn't go with a Big T28, but it's your call. I would do a little more research on turbos before I decided on the T28. Of course, if you already are aware of your options, be my guest. But you could be running faster for 2/3 of the cost of a big T28.

How?

How?

A new T28 will cost you roughly $750. However, a brand spankin new EvoIII 16g will cost you about $550 for the turbo, and another $150 for an install kit - which brings you to a total of about $700. The evoIII 16g will outflow the T28 any day of the week, and it's efficiency range is slightly higher, which allows for more boost/power. Spoolup on the evoIII 16g is maybe 200 rpm's slower than the T28, if any. Don't waste your money on a T28, AT LEAST get an evoIII 16g if you plan on running 12's pretty easily.

I made the suggestion based on the fact that the guy doesn't know about mitsu turbos and install kits. If you're interested in modifying some stuff, get a 16g for sure. T28 is still the fastest DSM in Alaska at 11.8.
