According to the info I've been able to find in this forum (thanks), I need to replace a faulty wheel sensor in my '97 Explorer. I was talking to the parts guy at our local dealer and I'm being told that you can't replace just one, but both have to be done in this case, for 94-97 model vehicles.
Could anybody here please comment on this? At CAD$190 apiece I'd like to replace just the faulty one if it's possible/safe to do so.

Its bullshit, I don't see why you'd need to do both.
As I understand it, the ABS sensor is a part of the hub. Its a hall effect sensor. it IS replaceable, but ford doesn't acknowledge that. If you hit a junkyard and get one from a working explorer, you can change out the sensor yourself with some skill.
My ABS sensor died right before my wheel bearing did - replace that as well if its racked up the mileage.

Steve: I have identical problem on my 1997 Ford Explorer XL. I'm scheduled to have it fixed tomorrow. Apparently they have to replace both front sensors as they only produce a new model for the front sensors and apparently you can't mix and match with the old ones. My cost including labor will be around $540 with GST. I had to pay an extra $60 initially for the diagnosis.
