Tyres
One set of tyres must complete qualifying and the race.

Reason: a harder tyre will reduce cornering speeds.

Am I reading that right, one set of tires for the race?

WTF are those morons thinking? :banghead:

I hereby declare F1 dead.....totally destroyed!!

Damn you Mosley! :banghead:
Fuck you Ecclestone!! :banghead:

i thought that rule already existed, that they had to start the race on the same tire they qualified on unless they qualified in the wet and its dry or the qualified in the dry and its wet.

the harder tires are good as they put more in the hands of the driver, with traction control AND sticky tires nobody would have any problems ever.

No, the way it is currently would read:

"Drivers start the race on the same set of tires they qualify on"

If you read that new rule, it sounds like they will start and finish the race on the same tires they qualified on.

there is no racing tire on earth that can make it through an entire race, there will obviously still be tire changes. Also, during the US coverage of qualifying today when they talked about the new changes, they didn't say much about tires, if they were getting rid of tire changes it would probably be the first think they'd mention.

Also, the privateer teams being allowed to run the V10 through '07 will make it very interesting on slow tracks like Hungary and Monaco where the extra torque may actually give teams like Jordan an advantage. The rev limitting will put them down to the same hp level as the V8's, but its hard to take away torque, they'd have to use something along the line of restrictor plates.

That's just it, I quoted the FIA press release, not some third party reporter.

I agree though, they can't seriously think they want to make a tire last an entire race, except if you read their 'reason' the tire manufacturers will have to use a hard compound to get the wear out the tire, which will mean slower speeds.

BTW, the USA is hooked on engine size, I'm sure they Speed coverage team stayed on what they feel audiences want to hear, not on the real technical stuff.
After all, you're talking about a TV channel that places 99% of its emphasis on driving in circles.

Ray, it's a bit worse than that. Not only does the tyre set have to last the whole race, but it also has to be used in qualifying.

We also have the new qualifying change - basically the same as today, only the first session is run in the reverse order to the finishing order of the previous race and the second session run on Sunday. What pisses me off, though, is that times will be aggregated.

That's the way I read it Alex, qualifying and the race.

What if it starts raining halfway through, do they expect them to keep going or can they change to rain tires?

Do they think about these things before they make this ludicrous rules?

Wow... That well and truly sucks... I dont know how else to put it. That really, really sucks.

they did fully explain the rule during the race today

apparently each team gets 2 sets of tires for the whole weekend, one of which they're supposed to use only for the saturday practice and 1st round qualifying. Running the whole race on one set of tires is absurd, they'll probably at least give them another set at some point during the season.

One whole race, only one, why not two or three? :screwy: And a driver should be allocated one engine for his entire career!
Sad to say, but with the way F1 and WRC are going NASCAR just keeps looking better and better.

Meh, NASCAR has the same kind of rule changes happening with shorter rear spoilers, and softer tires. Everyone's trying to place more of the show on the driver as opposed to the car and test the skill of each driver.

Old thread, but I like the new 1 set of tires rule....forces a driver to strategize on how to make his tires last instead of going balls out every lap...plus it brings a challenge to the tire manufactures, on how to make a high-grip/long-lasting tire.

As for the rain aspect, if it starts to rain they can change to a wet tire, but if it stops raining they have to put the same set of tires back on that they were using before it started raining. Also each team is allowed to change one tire (yes only one) per car, and they don't have to have a reason for it.

Interesting to see this thread again. It doesn't seem to be that bad, does it. Afterall, like always, time will tell, if it is the right way to go. ;)

i think they should start a drifting series with the formula cars....hehe...lets see some cars going sideways at 200+ miles an hour

The idea of motorsports like F1 is to find the fastest way around a course. Most of the time breaking traction = slower. :)

yeah but why not have fun with it REALLY make the tire manufactures work for it...hehe i mean if they can stick sooooo well why not just have fun with it too. hehe besides with all the mods they should be able to slide quicker than just the d1 cars
