Intake /exhaust systems

I've used K&N on other vehicles with good results on full size vehicles.
I have a 03 S-10 with I4 eng. The intake seems pretty restrictive. Has anyone seen a change in fuel economy with a full Cold Air intake system? I'm only getting about 22 mpg combined. I thought a 4 cyl would be better on gas.
Thanks

22mpg combined is very good for a s10.

The I4 is very underpowered for that truck and it works pretty hard keeping it going.

I wish I got 22mpg combined.

You will see a difference with performance if you let the engine breathe better but start off with a muffler first and then move to an intake.

Always exhaust before intake.

just added a K-N FIPK to my 02 S-10 4.3

could not get any better than 21 mpg stock.

just finished mileage test and after first tank i'm getting 23 mpg

going for exhaust next

You won't see any difference with an intake if you don't have a muffler to compliment it.

Whats the point of having more air coming in if you can't get rid of it.

Thats what I was after, but looking at the intake tube, it has a 180 and 90 degree bend. It seems like the exhaust couldn't be much more restrictive. So, what mufler works, I can get a good deal on Gibson cat-back, but as an old guy, I'm not looking for a lot of noise. My F250 V10 stayed pretty mellow but I know the I4 needs to be pushed a little more which will produce more noise.

If a Gibson Catback will fit on your, that would be a quiet a better flowing alternative.

BTW, how much can you get it for?
