My 1998 Malibu LS V6 has recently developed a major starting problem--need to press gas pedal down a bit to start engine-that's not even a guarantee to start it, then if it starts the rpms race up to 2500-3000 for a bit...any ideas what could be wrong?...a friend said it could be the TPS-throttle position sensor.

check the harness connector for the IAC, if its ok, clean the IAC (idle air control), it sounds as though its stuck open too far.

yep My 99 malibu does the same thing, I have cleaned the IAC motor and checked the harness and still no luck. Bout ready to get rid of the dang thing. Only gave $500 for it and now I know why, problem after problem.
