transfer case noises??

My 91 Isuzu Trooper has been making a rattling noise for some time now. I think i have narrowed it down to the transfer case. It usually only rattles when accelerate or decelerate in gear, when im out of gear it is usually fine. Just yesterday though when accelerating i have noticed a high pitch noise i think is coming from the transfer case ( not coming from under hood ). It only does this when under acceleration and stops when i let off the gas. It is loudest in 1,2,3,5 gears. Anyone know what this might be? Thanks.

does 2WD or 4wd make a difference? manual trans i assume? are you sure its coming from the transfer case not the transmission? my guess is 4th is direct drive, where the input and output shafts of the transmission are locked to together, and the counter shaft is not used to transfer power(but it still spins). check the fuild levels of both transmission and transfer case. mileage? i have a feeling your trans needs rebuilt.

Sierra is absolutely correct. The transfer case is not affected by change in gears on the transmission. Likely the bearings on the countershaft are worn.

*Well my 4wd never really worked solid (over 40mph you would hear a loud chunking noise) so i only use 4wd to get outa snow.
*Its a 91 with 150k miles.
*The only reason i think i might be the transfer case is because it has been leaking oil for a few months now.

*Would bad bearings cause the rattling or the high pitch whining noise? (it whines when on the gas only and progressively gets louder w/ RPMs)
*If it were low or out of oil would that cause the bearings to go bad real fast?
*How much does something like changing the bearings cost if thats the problem?

And If its the transmission... im probably just going to go off roading one day till it dies, take my plates off, and hit the road. =)

that is exactly what some bearings (or seals) do when they go bad.

YES
