another noob

greetings all... complete noob here... decided to pick this hobby up.. as winter rolls around and all my r/c cars/truck must be put away b4 it snows...

so far i'm in the mist of completing a Revell Z8 (bought it cheap locally, $6) and just picked up 2 more cars by Tamiya..

one question i do have is: how in the world do most of you guys/gals get the interior and small engine parts "perfect" looking... is an airbrush a must for the interior?? should ppl avoid using brush for small parts...

any feedback would be a plus..

I guess most, incl. myself, use an airbrush for clean looking interiors. But, I've seen some guys get great results with enamels brushed on.

wow! $6 for a revell kit.I pay like R200 for a typical revell kit and the exchange rate is around R6 to a $ so work it out.

yup.... same guy in RCZ.. heheee... i've always wanted to do auto modeling but was too wrapped-up in r/c.. i'm not fading away from it but as mentioned winter is near and r/c is starting to get expensive...

$6 for the Z8 kit cuz i went to Michaels (arts & craft store) for paint and noticed they had a small section for model cars... and they had a 50% off coupon in the Sunday paper

well, i guess i gotta get my airbrush back from my bro to paint interiors.. are you guys basically using masking tape to section off the area to be painted??? has anyone used liquid mask to section off areas... works well on lexan bodies but will it bleed on modeling parts....

WELCOME! As for me I prefer to use airbrush or spray can when painting the interior, even small bits.

For interiors, I prefer to spray the base color (can or airbrush) then paint the details with either a very fine brush, a toothpick, or tiny pens.

When hand-painting interior bits, I sometimes go with the cheap craft acrylics (the one that are 88¢ at Michael's) and thin them down a lot, so after several coats, I get fewer brush marks.

damn, this auto modeling is more challenging then i thought. :) .. it's so much harder to paint 1/24 scale parts then a 1/10, 1/8 lexan body.. :biggrin: but i'm gonna hang in there... with everyone's help of course.....hahaaa

I used to hang out in RCZ under the same user name too.
It is harder to paint 1/24 but it is more fun.
1/10 will be a piece of cake once you get used to this. :iceslolan

Trust me.. i've read it over and over again... but you gotta remember most of the FAQ/ Tutorial is the author's opinion/direction on how to do something.. it's basically one sided.. therefore, i see no ill effect in asking ppl for a second opinion.. example, i see two ways to make deep dish wheels... so, there must be more then one way to paint an interior, assemble a car, etc.....

besided most of the threads on there is dated back to 2002... c'mon, you're telling some methods haven't changed in 2+ years..

You do bring up a good point there. There are plenty of other ways to do things. The FAQ is not the only way to do it, rather it is a guide if you do not know how to do it. I cannot tell you how many newbs have asked questions that were in the FAQ. I have pondered the idea of "amending" the FAQ, like adding things or making new tutorials. In no way am I putting down the FAQ though.

Boostspike, if you find that there are other, or easier ways to do things then please write up a how to and help out us fellow modelers!
