problem with my 4X4 transfer case

first of all, i have a 93 jeep cherokee. and i'm not sure if the low4wd and high4wd are part time or full time. how long can i drive it in part time anyway? and i have problem switching from 2wd to 4wd. whenever i tried to pull the lever, it would easily go to neutral, but it made noises when i tried to put it in 4wd. i'm not sure if it's because the car is old and i never put it in 4wd or if there's any problem with the transfer case stuff. should i go to a shop and have a mechanic check it out?

Hi there, if I understand correctly, you can shift from 2-high to 4-high just fine, but when you try to go to 4-low it grinds. Is your jeep an automatic? If so, before you shift to 4-low, I think you should be in Park or Neutral so your tranny isn't trying to spin the input shaft to the transfer case.

2H & 4H use the same gears in the transfer case, you're just engaging the linkage to the front end. When you go to 4-low, however, the transfer case has to pass through its own neutral (not the one in the transmission) which would allow the output shaft from the tranny to spin and cause the gears in the transfer case to grind. Whenever you go to 4-low, make sure you are stopped and the tranny is out of gear.

Yup, and try having your vehicle moving about 2-3 mph when going from 4hi to 4lo, it really does help the shift.

Also, unless you have the LIMITED XJ you'll only have the PT 4x4. In this case, use 4 HI or LOW ONLY when your on a slppiery surface, mud, snow, loose gravel. On pavement, very bad! In the PT t-case there is no clutch working to allow for the slipping of the driveshafts when you are turning and such.
