Anyone know of a "quick fix" that will drop 6 points off HC emmissions? I am on a fixed income of just under 750 a month and recently *cries* made the mistake of initially paying too much for a 1987 Isuzu trooper II ($900). Since then I have had to replace the master cylinder, distributor, O2 Sensor, Carberator, plus normal stuffers like plugs, wires cap, rotor, oil, oil filter, air filter, and a few vacumn lines. I am already in almost 1500 dollars on a car that Kelly Blue book lists as worth 400 dollars, and now I am at 109 ppm on hydrocarbons out of a max of 103, and am told that I need to have the Cat replaced and the cheapest I have been able to find someone to do it is another 400 dollars (of which I have 75 of. I have paid 90 dollars at theree different smog stations over the last 2 weeks to have the vehicle tested and cant seem to get the smog down to passable levels.. I am desperate for knowledgeable people to help here.. If I dont get this car to pass smog by the 27th I will be without wheels and need to have transportation. It will take me 2 months at least to save up enough again to have the cat replaced.. *cries*. I really like the car and all but if she dont pass smog I might as well just sell it for the few hundred I will be able to get off it and reside myself to hermitism and 3 mile walks to the store for food every week....

Here are the typical suspects - http://www.recarbco.com/technical/smog/smoginfo.html

The simplest fix is to make sure your engine if FULLY warmed up when the test is done. Don't allow it to cool down waiting in some line with the engine off. Keep it running at a slightly high idle if you have to. Doing a freeway run just before the test can also help. The magic potions in a bottle may also help but are probably not all that good for the health of your engine. So if you go that route change your oil shortly thereafter.

Completely warming up the engine is essential as Travelman has already mentioned.

Here is where you can purchase a brand new universal catalytic converter for $58.99-

We have bought several of these and they work perfectly.

Another trick is "Iso-Heet". Two bottles mixed in a full tank of fuel have helped me pass emissions in the past. Add the heet before filling up.

Are you still going to buy my factory workshop manual for that 1987 Trooper of yours?

Awaiting your response,
Dale

OK, I'll wait until you get some funds, it sounds like you have had an expensive month.

On that converter, you may want to check if it is OK to install it a Kalifornia car if you decide to order one.

Did you ever get the Trooper to pass emissions?

Just wondering.

hehe yeah, barely. after doing a bunch of replacement parts I ernded up remoiving the valve cover, loosing up the valves a little (more valve lash) then retarded the timing 4 degrees (max allowed and still pass).. it ran like CRAP but lowered all my specs on the test to passing :)

Funny how an engine can run so badly and still pass the emissions test.

It makes me wonder about how accurate the test really is.

I had thoughts along the same lines.. back when she ran like a raped ape her smog test failed miserably.. I had to make her run like a 2 cylinder honda missing on 1 cylender to get her to pass.. heheh
