Does this really help gas milage?

I bought some "guides" off of Ebay since it was only $4 dollars to see what kind of stuff it had. It has a bunch of do it your self guides on the Verticle trunk, angel eyes, and a whole lot more. There was one stating if you unplug your ECU fuse for like 5 minutes then plug it back in and start your car, it "reprograms" it to give better gas milage after upgrades (headers, exhaust, etc.) I just wanna know if this acutally helps.
It went more into detail but i dunno if someone would wanna be an ass and report me for giving this "information" away for free. But if anyone wants to "know more about this" get at me at TruRicanPlaya16 on AIM.

give away what information? No one will report you to anyone, because the "information" you paid for is common knowledge to automotive DIYers. In some (newer) cars, if you remove power from the ecu, it will recalibrate itself when you plug it back in and turn the car on. It really won't affect gas mileage that much though...

it's actually recommended that you reset your ecu after doing basic mods. Helps keep the CEL off.

I always reset mine when I replace something. Like the Fuel Filter, PCV vavle, spark plugs. It just helps the engine run better and stay tuned in the correct matter. And afterall, the ecu is always calibrating itself to get the best possible gas mileage out of the driving situation your in.

just pull the negative cable off your battery for 10 seconds, then reattach. Downside - have to reset all your radio channels and clock(s). All that BS that relies on the battery for memory

Yeah, it will also re-set everything, as GScivic7 siad, but this is the easiest way to re-set everything. If your car has anti-theft radio codes, r is one where you have to load a "key cd" in to make it work is if looses power, then make sure you have the cd with you or know the codes...some stereos are like this, some are not. If you's is not then o worries, other than the fact everything gets re-stet, the clock, pre-sets, audio settings, etc.

I have already done that many times.
I still think i get shitty gas mileage (FOR A CIVIC) .
I have the D16Y8, 1.6L Vtec (slow as shit but reliable) 11 gallon tank. I only get about 250 mpg
thanks a lot

yup. in my sol I had to reset the ecu for freaking everything. It wouldn't throw CEL codes for everything, but it would act funny till I did. Hell if I went from 93 to 89 octane gas cause I was poor, by the time about 10 miles had passed and the 89 was in there she would start idling erratically, and she even stalled on me a few times. So I pull over, reset ECU, voila. So mine was getting reset about once every 3 weeks for a while. But then I got my ecu chipped (used uberdata), and never had to reset it again. :)

Unless you have a civic hybrid, 250 miles per tank is actually about average for a civic with your baisc bolt ons. Intakes, chips, plus size wheels, sticky tires and the ever present lead foot conspire to decrease your fuel efficiency. Though they all increase the dynamic capabilities of the car, these factors keep most cars away from their rather optimistic epa ratings. You're only going to see those kinds of economies in a stock civic with very little added weight and a conservative driving style.

Yea, but a stock civic should be able to get28mpg, and theyhave an 11.9 gallon tank. Thats 333 miles per tank.
250 miles on the tank is 21mpg!!!! I civic on boost can do better, A V8 Mustang does better. There is no way 17" wheels, a CAI, header and exhuast will effect gas mileage like that. Besides, I/H/E doesn't take more gas, it increaes air effiecney, which won't kill gas mileage. There is no way a civic with basic bolt on's should get 21mpg, which is 250 miles per tank. If your gas mileage is that bad, something else is wrong.

Your math is definitly correct putting fuel economy at 21mpg with those figures, however when was the last time you rode your civic all the way to completely empty? My figures are based upon seeing plenty of ricers getting about 26 miles per gallon or worse after the effects of driving with a lead foot, with heavy stereos , people in the car, 35lb 18 inch wheels on all four corners, p.o.s. aftermarket chips that create rich fuel curves without timing changes, fouled plugs...
I definitely agree that any civic getting a true 21mpg is a sick puppy indeed, but under the abuse of a foolish ricer even 25mpg on an EX, DX, or LX is not out of the question. I drive an 2000 HX, the most fuel efficient gas model civic, and once saw 27.3mpg after driving around town with my foot on the floor, 200lbs+ of stereo, 17" wheels, and a cheap intake while my normal city mileage is around 32mpg.
You are definitely right that GOOD I/H/E's shouldn't hurt emissions. To the contrary, a good combination selected for low and midrange gains should actually increase fuel economy through slight gains in thermal and volumetric efficiencies as well as reduced pumping losses when tuned properly, something most enthusiasts neglect. Also most people out there with basic mods tend to drive more aggressively with each new bolt-on in an attempt to enjoy the new power, new sounds, and new feel of the car.
As far as forced induction civic fuel economies, their fuel economies will vary even more, after all substantially more air and more fuel mean worse fuel economy when driven hard. However, well tuned turbo charged engines running on the lean side have markedly better thermal and volumetric efficiencies than when they weren't boosted. When off boost and driven by Miss Daisy and can slightly improve their fuel economy. (but no one boosts their motor to drive in the slow lane!)
Anyway, long story short, I definitely agree with you, I just wanted to clarify myself.

you could get from texas to ohio for 8 bucks
if gas were .30 cents a gallon
i set my tripomiter thing back to zero when i filled my gas tank last. i even fill it over a $1 after the nozle click off. i am about to run out of gas (the gas light is on).
lets see..... the tripometer now reads
235 miles. that sucks.

Yea, if you are truely getting only 235 miles per tank with a civic, then something is wrong.
I think one problem I see with a lot of drives is they have no clue how many MPG they get. Tank gets near empty, the go. I know I don't have to fill up until around 300 miles to a tank, and that usually is only a 10gallon fill up most, meaning I still have 2gallons left, give or take. Sure, wheels, a stereo, etc weights it down, but I can still get good gas mileage.
Some people DO get bad gas mileage, but others just fill up before they really need to. For example, the true measure how how much you can get out of a tank isn't the trip meter when you fill up, but how many MPG you get multiplied by how many gallons the tank will hold. In some cases, I have see the car read close to empty when a car still has a good 3-3.5 gallons left. At 30mpg, for example, even 1.5 of those gallons is 45 miles more!! Suddenly the tank just went from 250 miles to 295-300 miles. That's why I think knowing how many MPG you get is very helpful. YOu can do the math, figure out how many miles approx you can go before a tank runs empty. This means you can go bye the trip meter besides the gas gauge. I find the trip meter more helpful than the gas gauge when the tank gets low. Sometimes, peoples gauges get less accurate as the gaslevel drops (it fluctates greater depneding on if you're on a hill, etc). If you've done the math and know how many miles you'll get out a tank, and go by the tripmeter also, it can really make a difference towards the end of the tank.:2cents:

How to Calculate Gas Milage
1) Fill your gas tank. Reset the trip odometer.
2) Drive until the gas gauge shows nearly empty.
3) Fill the tank again, and note the milage on the trip odometer, and how many gallons of gas you put in the car.
4) Divide the number of miles you drove by the number of gallons of gas you put in the tank.
IE if i drove 320 miles, filled my tank, and put 9.2 gallons of gas in the car, I would be getting about 34 miles to the gallon.
that should give you a better idea of what milage you're getting.
