i have a 98 eclipse rs...just recently i took my valve cover off...when i went to torque the vc bolts back on...they broke...i was measuring with feet ..i know it says 26-36 inches in the haynes, but i didnt know what to torque it to in ft. i didtn break the valve cover or anything, but THE BOLTS BROKE OFF INTO THE HEAD...what do i do? the dealership wanted $300-480 to back the bolts back out...does anyone have a better suggestion as to how i should go about doing this?

u have to use an ez-out its pretty easy to do the ez out will tell u what size drill bit to use then u just punch the middle so u drill dead center and it dont slip off. the ez out is like a reverse bit it pulls it out

when you say 'they broke', how many are you talking about? i'm sure it is only one, but just curious...

usualy you drill out a hole, and then tap the hole with a reverse thread thing like was stated above

i just took some broken studs out of my head no more than an hour ago. it took about 5 min. per broken stud. there is an excelent vFAQ on it. i had a good friend of mine do and i watched him and it looks very very easy. all he did was take a very small drill bit and drill a little ways into the broken stud. then took a screw extractor, or ez-out, and threaded it into the stud and it came out like butter. if you don't know what an easy out is its a reverse threaded drill bit. so you screw it in counter-clockwise but the counter clockwise motion turns the broken stud out. its very simple...
take a look at this:

Go to autozone or whatever your local automotive parts store is, and buy an Ez-Out. I've used it countless times to pull broken studs out of the manifold; they work great. Just make sure you take your time when doing, cause if you fuck up, it's a lot more work to get it out!

if i use an ezout...do i need larger screw to place in afterwards...or can i just get the factory bolts and put them in from the dealership...only two of the bolts are broken...and while on the subject...the reason i took my valve cover off was because it was leaking oil bad...especially from the right side of the head...also, everything under my car is covered in oil...what could it be?

probably your valve cover gasket, but no, using an easy out will not make the threads a larger size. it just turns the broken stud right out. paying $300 is RIDICULOUS IMO...$20 is ridiculous too!!

it should be fine with the same size, but if the treads are messed then u have to drill it out and get a heila coil (spelling?) not hard either.

ok...so im going to try that...my bf works at oreileys and i guess there is an ez out there...hopefully or they can order one...the website that i got sent to by *tfoti* was really helpful and i think that is what we are going to do...but has anyone heard anything about recalls on the eclipse's head or anything like that....i read somewhere about it, but i might have read wrong..it had something to do with the oil leaks...thanks for all of your help though!!
