sloppy rear end

I just bought a used 2002 1500, 4.8L Auto, 50K miles. When I accelerate from a stopped position (shift the weight to the rear end) I feel the back end move and squeek. This does not occur if I slowly accelerate.

Is this common? If not, what might it be?

i tink it is pretty common in the newer chevs if you are describing this the way i think you are. it clunks right?

Simple your truck is not a track car, you are stressing the truck by doing that.

Trucks are for hauling big heavy stuff.

Now on Jeep I can see why.. See how fast you can roll it ;P

What is up with these Disels guys supping them up. One truck pulled up next to me wanting to race my for titles.

The truck was a 2500 4x4 with the durmax.
I told him that I would pay him $10,000 if he could keep up but you had to stay with me the whole 10 miles.
8 miles of it was off road. He got stuck in the mud, I had to help him out.

The reason he wanted to race, is b/c if he had a few mods done to it, he coulda smoked ass. If it hadda beed a Cummins, even worse... for you :)

That's right, I don't really haul much stuff in my truck, but we are getting off the issue here. Is this the common chevrolet rear end clunk that i think he is describing. I have it in my truck, it's in my boss' truck (both of `em 89 & 94) It is a very common problem, and you don't have to be "ragging" on it for it to rear its ugly face. Mine does it everytime from a dead stop.

Mine does it also pretty much every time I start off, especially if its in a straight line. I've asked around and nobody seeems to think it'll hurt anything, so I've just learned to ignore it.

Yea, thanks for the replies, although I don't know what the heck that dude was talking about with racing. I drive my truck like a truck. Slow and easy, most of the time.

My 2000 Silverado does that too.
It is very annoying, but is there a way to fix
it so it doesnt do it???

I have a 2000 Chev 2500 and it makes the same noise. I can also feel it but to me it sounds more like metal sliding on metal. At first I thought the bolts holding the box were loose and that was shifting when I took off.

Anyway, I was aksing around and have been told that where the leaf springs meet the frame, there is a bushing. It is worn out and that is what is causing the noise. Also, since the bushing is worn out, you can feel the leaf springsmoving because of the "slop".

I am thinking about tearing into mine because it is driving me nuts. If someone knows of anything different, let me know to save me the trouble.

Before everyone starts tearing there trucks apart can i sujest something? If you excelarate from a standing start and your axil begins to wrap as they will do on 4000 pound vehicles the only thing that will stop the wrap is the bump stops made of rubber . These bump stops hit and correct me if im wrong here but the hit the underside of the leaf springs correct. What does that sound like? Its a thunk guys and girls and it is normal. Try this, put a small video camera under your truck somwere and do some stops and starts to see how much your rear end moves. Wraping is normal and only preventable with a large expendature of money on aftermarket parts. What you all should be concerned about is if there is any side to side movement or any turning movement lateral to the direction the truck is going. Guys these are trucks get over it. Im less concerned about clunks and thunks then i am about the damn ABS brakes not working on these pos gm products. Look, if its a thunk or a clunk the only trhing you can do is mash the gas and use it till you brake it. Replace whats broken and do it again...jj

i have a 2000 z71 with a 161000 on it still run and drives like the day i brought it new still clunks too when you take off from a stop i just put all new brake rotors on it did help take up some of the slack in the rear drive line to quite it a little but it will be back but it has lasted this long so keep on driving
