Eclipse Recall Dec 2000

Ok, well... I'd have to say that I'm already pissed off, cause I was supposed to have my whole front axle rebuilt with new parts (cheaper than replacing). Any way... I knew that I had a bad rubber boot on one of the lower lateral arm ball joints. I expected this to be fixed when I took it to this guy to do (never have or will go back to him again... Its been a few months). So I get a flat tire and my friend put the spare on for me (good thing to have a guy help out... Sometimes I don't want to get dirty... Sometimes I do.) And ofcourse he has to say "Hey! You know you have a bad boot on your axle." To me, this is just one more thing to add onto the list of things to fix that should have been fixed list. At this point, I'm pretty accepting of New things going wrong; however, I felt pretty stupid trusting this guy to do a rebuild and do a complete one (if he did anything at all) on my axle. So, to the point. I was going through the recall list for 97 Eclipse models and found one on Dec 15, 2000 for possible damage to the rubber boots during assembly, which can bring in water and dirt. In addition, the boots also could possibly leak moisture which can cause the ball stud to corrode. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, can you still have it fixed after the recall expires?

To my knowledge, recalls never expire. Normally they are "safety recalls", which means you could have a REALLY bad day if the part/parts being recalled broke. As for the lower ball joints, I had them replaced in February on my Spyder. Just call the dealer and give them your VIN and they will be able to tell you if the recall has been done on your car. Good Luck!!!!

that's a very old recall. take it to the dealer and have them replace it. it'll take them 20 mins with no cost.

I just recently got the lower ball joint safety recall done on my car.

Good thing I did because my tires were about ready to fall off.

It took them about 1/2 hour, but when I drove home, my alignment was way off.

Aren't they suppose to do an alignment too?

Anyways, my car floats side to side now when i'm driving on the freeway. I'm thinking that I need to re-do the whole suspension, but the guy at the dealership never mentioned anything about worn parts that needed to be replaced.

Is the recall for a specific model and year?

Piss poor design on the part itself. They change the recall a couple times. The first recall was to slap some goo on the bad boots ;) Too late to change the design though. I think the latest version is just better boots. Same part otherwise though.

BTW, anyone can inspect thier own balljoints, and I would seriously recomend everyone go take a look. Some poeple dont find out they're bad until the tire is facing in the wrong direction, and things get ugly.

JAck up the front of the car. The balljoint in question is on the "Lower Lateral Link," the straight arm coming out from the front "K member" to the knuckle. Use a prybar or a helper or something to lift the tire not far (1/2" will do), but abruptly. On a lift, use your shoulder to jerk the wheel upward. If the knuckle goes up without that arm a noticeable amount, the joint has failed. Spec limit is around a 10th of a mm, IIRC, but its been a while so that could be off a bit.

She is. She's got the split personality disorder. She comes up all nice, you pet her, she purrs, then she tries to take your hand off. Only to people she doesn't know though.
