1994 Rodeo Headlight Wiring/Switch Issue??????

I have a strange headlight issue with my Rodeo. The headlights quit working the other day. I am baffled by my findings with a volt meter. There is 12V present at all three wires going into the headlight with the switch on. I tried a new realy and still no lights. So I then cut the wire that is the ground to the bulb and ran it directly to ground. With this setup all I have are high beams. Someone with electrical knowledge/electrical digrams please help me out. One thing to note is that the high beam indicator inside the truck does not come on with this current setup. Thanks!
